The first few episodes weren't bad because it was shaping up to be Sailor Moon 2013 starring horses and /co/ will give any cartoon a try.
From there it seemed there were one or two episodes every few episodes that were on that track, and Lauren Faust herself was pushing for the angle. Inbetween bouts of what you said, there was the occasional "the group goes to hunt a fucking manticore or gets attacked by a giant bear made of stars" or some shit and that was kinda rad.
But then that was all before the fanbase came in and since the show had the pokemon/touhou/homestuck/Sonic formula of "tons of diverse characters, you can even make your own!" that spelt the end of it. And even worse, the writers kind of acknowledged these fans more by writing their show with more in-jokes and shit only those types of fans would get. Then Lauren Faust got kicked off the team for trying to make a cool show she wanted from the beginning and not putting enough effort into pandering.
It's kinda sad, but one of the more interesting stories to come from /co/.

After Fallout 3 came out, some guy wrote a stupidly long fanfic that got really, really popular called Fallout: Equestria. Apparently the writing and characters are both good, but it suffers from a lot of the same flaws as Fallout 3 (namely the protagonist being the literal centre of the world) and a ME3-tier final arc that was retarded as all fuck.
The devs know about it and actually sent the author a whole bunch of Fallout merch that's generally reserved for the devs themselves.
