From the broken English I can read thanks to google translate, they only really mention that it was a time related issue. The devs acknowledged that for a Mario Galaxy character, Rosalina was the natural pick, but Luma was used instead due to having a simpler model. Makes sense, seeing as Rosalina does a lot when she plays in Ultra Smash. Luma's stubby body makes for simple animations, sorta like the Sprixie Princess in this game I guess.

Peach's hover isn't the same as what Rosalina is doing. Rosalina practically flies with her magic all over the place and makes other objects levitate for an indefinite amount of time. Peach just sorta hovers for a few seconds then falls down, and she has to hold her arms and tuck in her legs to do it. They're not even the same thing apart from staying off the ground.

I don't know, I sort of feel the opposite. They might rehash games, but very rarely series. Just compare the Mario, Wario, Yoshi and Kriby platformers. If it was just two princesses, the game might end up really close to the older series in terms of gameplay, and I don't think they would want that. But with three, you can build the combat completely differently. Instead of main character + companion, you might end up with a system where you would switch back and forth between the characters, in order to use different attacks or abilities. I think that has a bigger chance of happening than just a reskinned Paper Mario.
You think people would at least be glad that Nintendo is a Mario girl other then Peach attention for once. Then again, it really just shows that Nintendo really suck at using their characters effectively.
