Introverted and slightly naive with a deep respect for his friends and loved ones. Also a big dreamer with goals of being a hero. Tbh though we haven't seen alot of the real cloud. The only time we have is a couple of scenes in crisis core and flashbacks to his childhood in ff7. People call him emo and with no personality because throughout the first half of ff7 he didnt know who he actually was and when he finally figured it out there wasnt time to dwell on it. So finally advent children comes around and he has time to think about all the crazy shit that has happend and all the bad things he did when he didnt know who he was and naturally becomes depressed and more introverted. So its justified. However, people see this part of cloud and just immediately assume thats how he always is. Ill admit he isnt the easiest character to like and i understand why people hate him but theres more to him than alot of people give him credit for.

I'm convinced very few people actually know anything about Cloud, the character. For example, I once saw someone describe cloud as "A nerdy guy who loves games and spends all day playing at the golden saucer instead of saving the world."
No. That's what YOU did with him. His actual character is mostly gathered trough his dialogue and actions in cutscenes. His model has a static, angry face, he shrugs in apathy and shakes his head all the time. He's stand offish with almost everyone and even tells his longtime allies he doesn't care about their problems.

The reason why people say different things about him is because we havent gotten that much time to actually see the real cloud. So alot of his character can be put up to interpretation as of now. We do have a few instances were we see how he was in crisis core and flashbacks to his childhood in ff7, but honestly thats not enough to definitively say imo. I think the problem is that very few of the "fans" of ff7 that made reaction videos of the remake reveal played more than half an hour in to the original because "the graphics were bad".
At the start he's only just met the AVALANCHE crew as a hired mercenary, and he's cold toward them before he opens up and shows his real personality. These people didn't play the game, so they don't know.
So basically casuals are spreading misinformation and oversimplifying complicated subjects all in a desperate attempt to not play video games.

You know I played FFVII for the first time a couple years ago and I was actually really surprised.
Most of the stuff Cloud got shit on...actually applied to Barrett. Barrett is the WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR character for most of the game. The guy who wants to give up and kill himself. The one always acting with angst and irrationality.
For most of the game Cloud is cocky and sarcastic. Then when he gets the truth bomb dropped on him he's more catatonic than emo. And then he pretty quickly gets over that and is full of courage and determination till the end of the game.
And in Crisis Core we see he's kinda shy and happy with the cocky outgoing-ness being Zack's personality.
Only time he's mopey is Advent Children and that's because he's sick. He gets over that too.

Like the wolf they used so much for imagery, he seperated himself form the pack when he believed that he was going to die of illness, in this case the geostigma. Before that point, all he had to do was be brave and strong, fight his way through his problems, but you can't kill a virulent infection with an oversized sword.
No wonder he felt like shit and didn't want his friends to see him in that state. He went from a strong leader with a definite enemy and a cause to fight for to basically a cancer patient.
Seeing him come back into form and fight with all he had after facing adversity was supposed to be uplifting and cool.

Pre-restored Cloud acts nothing like Zack beyond swordsmanship and general body language.
What made Cloud interesting was the fact that his attitude as a grizzled Ex-SOLDIER that didn't give no fucks about anyone and only fought to settle the scpre with an old enemy was all a front for a man lost in his lack of identity, self-loathing, and subconsciously forced reunion-obsession that even he was convinced of. But even with out all of that, even his Ex-SOLDIER persona was refreshing for a JRPG protagonist; truth be told, it felt very western, han-solo-esque compared to what you'd nprmally expect out of a japanese RPG.
Zack, on the other hand, gave a fuck about everything. He was a lot more along the lines of what one might expect from a JRPG protagonist at the time, which is why in Crisis Core, he just felt like a collage of "hero" tropes shpved into one character rather than something unique.

Actually, FMV Tifa was done without Nomura's input, specifically by the guy that directed Spirits Within. AC Tifa actually followed the size shown in the original concept art by Nomura, since he supervised the character models for the film.
