This is pretty much the literal, objectively correct ranking.
Everyone who says "No, Sh2 is the bestest, it's so psychological and shit, it's what SH is all about!!!!" have never played another SH in their life.
S is and will always be about Alessa and the cult.
Therefore alone 1 and 3 are the best SH games.

I like how they give you a false sense of security with the regenerating health in the apartment, just to take it away later
The twin victims may also be the best designed monster in the series

But the game also had a lot of backtracking and an escort mission
You're supposed to go alone through horror games man, and the moment you were going a second time through all the areas would've been the PERFECT opportunity to introduce the otherworld and the flashlight

I don't know what I would vote for if there ever was a vote for this sort of thing. I could maybe pick one favorite from each game
SH1 = puppet nurses/doctors and the jumping adults
SH2 = Nurse and abstract daddy
SH3 = Closer and dog I think.

Yeah, I'm good with this.

People like to bash Shattered Memories but it was an interesting take on things, just an interesting way to look at the story. It's its own thing, separate of the rest, and is an okay game. I think fleshing out the psychology mechanic would have been cool but it worked for what it was, I suppose.

Also, UFO ending. I chuckled.

2 is a great game, but 1 (clearly not by today's standards) and 3 are objectively the best silent hill games.
The only reason 2 is so hyped is because it was the first sh game for most players. and after all these years it became a meme game.
There is a reason why the movie used pyramid head instead of the moth, because no normie has ever played sh 1.

Play it, it's easily one of the best games out there.
And i mean games in general, not survival horror games.
After over a decade, it looks still better than recent games and has a phenomenal atmosphere.
But whatever you do, don't play on hard. The riddles are almost impossible.
>>
>>316419184
exactly
>>
>>316419035
Different anon, but some of Origin's levels were fucking labyrinthine, and not in the fun way. That fucking asylum got my goat good.

The characters were okay, it was nice getting some more Lisa, but it felt kind of bare-bones otherwise. A lot of story being told, not a lot being shown, felt like.
>>
>>316419035
I didn't like the story at all, most of the enemy designs were poor, and the game played it too safe and was too derivative of the older games. It didn't try anything to make it stand out on its own. It was still enjoyable and surprisingly scary at times, and I liked the references to The Tempest, but I liked all the others better.
>>
>>316413662

>Origin's levels were fucking labyrinthine, and not in the fun way
Isn't that the point of SH games? You check every door on a floor until you find the one unlocked one that leads you to the next item.
>>
>>316417886
It was a nice exploration game, and worked just great on the Wii but it was far from a Silent Hill game. Hell, it was barely a horror game.

My biggest issue is that the game is so repetitive and that there isn't any threat in the normal world. Also, part of the reason I loved the nightmare sequences in SH was because I got the explore the little things that made it unnerving; in SM you gotta keep moving but well, it's not like there are many things you can look at because it's covered with ice.
>>
>>316419184
I don't think so. Both had shitty stories. Homecoming was actually scary, had much better enemy designs, and better combat. But it was also far more action focused than the other games and had boring environments. Downpour had better environments and much better pacing with more exploration and better puzzles. But it also had terrible enemy designs outside of the weeping bat, worse combat, and technical problems galore.

Both were okay as generic horror games, but neither felt like Silent Hill and neither was significantly better than the other.

A Shattered Memories spiritual sequel would have been great if they just got rid of the chase scenes and replaced them with traditional otherworld stuff. Maybe keep like two or three chase scenes for when you encounter a specific enemy, but no more than that. Add in a few enemies during the non-otherworld parts, and add in defensive weapons like the REmake had so if you get caught you can escape without taking damage if you use one of the limited-use weapons.
>>
>>316419248

>>
>>316419863

You need to be knowledgeable enough about Shakespeare to recognize his books by reading a single passage, and then know which one of his works is in which volume of the Anthology.

So yes, either a guide, lower difficulty or a fuckton of research, in a time where it wasn't as easy as "Google it".

>>
>>316420557
Meme game in his case means a game that dwarfs the entire rest of the series in popularity, to the point where people only play 2 then exclaim that the rest of the series is like that.
Just cause it's a meme game doesn't mean it's bad.
It has the lowest score of the first 3 games on Gamespot.
Fucking every game that came out in the past year has 9/10 scores there. Deus Ex has an 8.6.
>>
>>316420548

>>
>>316420389
Have you played or watched this game recently?

They had NOTHING. Konami dumped everything after they made the game, the PC port dudes had to completely rebuild the game, as well. They didn't want to pay real money for a cult series noone really gives a shit about, so they cheaped out the devs fucked it.
MGS HD port was rebuilt by a real team scraping shit out of the discs.

>>316422508
I wouldn't like it. Loses effect after so much, and I spend so much time exploring I would just get annoyed. Nemesis was big because it was a huge change for the series, and the only really scary thing that caused tension in the first three games.

That brings up the issue of HD remasters of games in the first place.

For TV and Movies they can take the original film negatives (if shot on film) and scan them at a higher resolution, remastering old music from original lossless recordings is probably not quite as much effort either.

Original source code for all these old games is probably really hard to keep together when replacing old hard drives and so on, if it was all even together at the same place at all.

Being a fan of old games is suffering.

Opinions of the movies?

I'll admit, I actually liked them. Up to that point, the first one felt like the first movie to actually make the effort to capture the atmosphere of the game. And it felt creepy; the CG didn't look as jarring and stupid as it sometimes tends to these days. Maybe if I went back to watch it now it'd be different, but at the time it was cool.

The second movie... disappointed me in some places? But I still liked it. My biggest gripes were Douglas dying, Harry NOT dying, and Vincent being a hot young hunk (and still related to heather, because stupid decisions).

Because Konami and their lawyers didn't feel like putting any more money and effort into these remakes than the absolute bare minumum required.

It's kind of pathetic really, even if I can sort of understand their approach from a financial and legal point of view.
>>
>>316425397
The first one is actually a good movie. Of course a movie can nver cover 100% of the source material. But as you said, the atmosphere was great, also the GI. And the PH scene was one of the most brutal scenes i've ever seen. It tried to capture all of the SH essence into one movie.
Of course that would fail, but it is still a good movie, even a decent SH movie.

The second one was simply atrocious. Generic 3d jumpscare shit for the youtube audience.
>>
>>316425986

First one is possibly one of the best game to movie adaptations. That's not to say it's a good movie, but in a world where we have the RE movies and Uwe Boll making video game movies SH was the lesser evil.

The second one is just utter shite. They made the wrong decision to make it a sequel to the first movie while trying to make the story similar to SH1&3 even though the first one was far from what the games were about (they just borrowed the characters and some ideas), so they ended up with a mess.

It's a pretty long video review and some people hate them, but I think this is a good analysis on why the second movie failed so much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQt2hNIBKNk

>Many fans write saying that Konami is 'bad off' these days. I agree they disrespect fans, but 'bad off' is not how I would describe Konami as a business entity. Investors seem to agree because Konami's stock price has risen over the months since they leaked the dismissal of Kojima and commenced the utter deconstruction of KojiPro. Such is the world we live in... *sigh* Being an artist is never easy. Kojima needs all the love and support that his tireless creative efforts have earned him. At the same time, nobody should be thinking that Konami is about to roll over dead anytime soon. The only thing they will be rolling over in is new piles of cash once their mobile pachinko games are launched. The entire digital entertainment industry is now poised and waiting for the Japanese government to legalize gambling. This is just the calm before the storm. Place your bets!

Nobody "talked him down." Konami simply said he wasn't allowed to do it.

Probably because that would have cost more funding, since that would have meant remodeling and brand new animation for all cutscenes and dialogue.

there was a lot of drama and ego-waving involved. The whole thing still boiled down to:
1) Konami didn't wanna pay royalties to the old VAs, and
2) Tomm Hulett hated literally everything in the original games, and made his crew bash the old actors.

It really didn't. If anything, it only made it worse. The combat in the originals was bad, but that was because the team only made it serviceable. They wanted you to run away from most fights. Hell, the third game literally even punishes you for killing monsters too much in the second playthrough and on.

Homecoming had some neat ideas, but they weren't meant for Silent Hill. And I mean that as in they were unfitting of what the combat was meant to be about. Dodging, QTE escapes, and battle damage only made the fights drag out, which isn't all that scary when you have a conga line of nurses, dogs, and other monsters.

Eddie was also, but that doesn't mean Angela wasn't. She was, but in a different way from different trauma. They had both killed anyway.

Silent Hill dating novel with Lisa, Cybil, Angela, and Heather when?

So... even after setting up for the plot of Silent Hill 2, they were going to keep focusing on Heather?

Christ.

The game is 12 years old and the screenshot is probably from a shitty pc port.
I can deal with a lot of bullshit, but everyone who says SH3 isn't one of the best looking PS2 games ever made, is just shitposting.

That and you can stun lock the monsters within a couple hits.

God I wish I could find the David Bettenhausen interview where he was talking shit about the original Silent Hill games while praising the fuck out of homecoming

How the niggering fuck can somebody this stupid? Scratch that, how do you go from an A+ port like pic related to this kind of bullshit thinking?

He still wrote plenty of the music. And still not seeing any proof that shows he didn't make anything himself.

Hard to say with Eddie. He might not have killed as many as he thought he did (unless those were real corpses and not his "monsters"), but he was so far into his own world of hatred that even a harmless question about his sanity tipped him off the edge

why was there never a PC version of downpour? not that I want to play it, but I need some closure and it's the only silent hill game I have yet to beat.

Get her comfortable and build trust in people, so she stops expecting more rape or betrayal or harsh treatments. Help her build confidence and have her realize that what happened can't be undone, but she doesn't have to let it define her.

It's just you brah. Frankly it's very special for me to see someone that proud to be involved in a great game. He is part of the magic that went into it's creation.
