I've played all 3 myself, I'd pick up at least Conquest and Revalation since those are the most different gameplay-wise. Conquest for the intentional limits on exp and gold outside of DLC, and Revalation for the ability to use any unit from either path, and farm EXP and gold.
Birthright follows most of the same rules as Revalation, but with less variety in units, so I don't see myself picking it up when the English version drops.

Birthright has difficulty issues. As in, Lunatic is less hard than Nohr's Hard mode. Otherwise it's Awakening 2.0 with better maps. Hard/Classic in Hoshido is said to be harder than Hard/Classic in Awakening, though.
Conquest can be a little restrictive, otherwise demanding on Hard, and Lunatic is crazy hard. Fans of Awakening will cry over finding it hard for not being able to grind. Some say Normal/Classic is pretty sweet, though. Story is hot garbage, though, the worst of all 3.
Revelations has serious unit balance issues, as in you get way too many and most of them are garbage or downright useless without serious grinding (We're talking Shadow Dragon tier bad units here). Hoshido units receive a lot of favoritism too.

This is just Nintendo being completely fine settling with the low hanging fruit, because fuck the consumer, money is #1. When we know games have done this type of style in one game, for the price of a normal game. In addition to the boring maps, items to reclass from promoted to nonpromoted unit are fucking stupid as hell, promote grinding, and make unit growths unimportant. Also the confession scenes are dumb and make me feel like I'm playing a shitty dating sim. I don't like the idea of a self-insert in Fire Emblem, but that's just me. It wasn't as bad in FE7 or even FE12. Another polarizing mechanic is pair up. It's pretty much always better to pair up because of the extremely strong stat bonuses as well as the extra attacks. Overall, Awakening is a mess of a bunch of different mechanics crammed into one game and none of them really work well. It looks fine, runs fine, and the music is okay, but it really shows that Awakening was supposed to be the last Fire Emblem. It's so controversial because it's quite a flawed game and it also became popular with the "waifu audience" for lack of a better term (definitely intended by IntSys). That gives it the look of a game dumbed down by appealing to a larger audience, something universally despised on /v/.
