Affirmative action is a good thing. Yes, it's discrimination but it's necessary. It is not a permanent thing though. We are at a point I believe that affirmative action is not as necessary so much as incentives are for those without an advantage, but I also think they should be given off class and not race any longer.
If people who were born into a good life because life isn't fair are always given an advantage it's impossible for poor people to catch up unless they are geniuses. A system with no affirmative action basically says "your life is shit and you aren't a genius so enjoy a sub par life for you and your children." The proof I have of this is when it was previously attempted to assimilate Native Americans with no Affirmative Action and they all become worthless welfare queens, drunks and all around shitters.

Schools are just collections of people, and there are a myriad of problems with poor public schools some of which being sub par teachers who were educated in the area in the first place.
I actually grew up in these types of areas. Even kids who did things such as get a 4.5 are second pick over a kid who gets a 4.5 in a better neighborhood by virtue of the school they are coming from.
If you then don't have the money to bus your kid to a better school or a private school your kid is just fucked, or looked at as a poor kid who tries hard and may get into a good school.

Also, Tomas Sowell is bringing up a great point about welfare that I think applies in general here. You cannot simply subsidize peoples lives and expect to not create a system of dependence. With affirmative action, the individuals still have to show a great EFFORT that is then being rewarded regardless of the inequalities of the system. This continues for a while and then stops and people are left to go alone because the standards have been raised among that community.
At no point should a person get a job just because they were the only black applying and they didn't remotely meet the requirements. That is, in my opinion, bad affirmative action, and I don't mean to imply that all affirmative action is good or well implemented.
