I've gone back and played BL2 again since getting my Steam Gamepad last month since its one of the big AAA games available on SteamOS. Its a great experience with the new system and really shows off how much better the trackball style control is than an analog stick.
If it wasn't for the novelty though I can see why some people don't like it. The humor can get a bit stale at times and some of the quests feel like a chore. Just seems like with a bit more polish it would have been better.

Borderlands 1 was pretty fun. Enemy variety was weak, but at least the Skag's basic gimmick of shoot -them-in-the-mouth was ok. Borderlands 2 improved as far as classes and actual gameplay goes, but the enemy variety was still bad and you spent half the game shooting robots.
Still, the games are alright coop. Cant understand the kind of masochist who'd play them alone though. Oh, and OP is a huge bitch.

Yeah. I have over 1k hours spread across two Steam accounts and the 360 version, and most of it was spent getting through OP8 on all characters, trying to beat speed runs, and build testing. Nice shoot n loot game for sure that was killed after the Pre-Sequel divided the community.

But I still love it a lot and will continue to replay it every once in a blue moon. I loved Borderlands 2 no matter what /v/ said about it's the horrible New Game+ and design philosophy that things "grinding is fun!" and "the only way to increase difficulty is by making everything a bullet sponge" in the first Borderlands you could actually find orange weapons without needing to specifically farm a boss for them, and your gun wouldn't become obsolete the second you leveled up twice after finding it.
Overall the first Borderlands is still the better game, 2 managed to entertain me for many many hours before I started to realize the flaws in it though, and I still think it's a great game for your first few playthroughs.

Bl1 had better guns, combat and loot system, but Gearbox got better at making characters with each iteration.
All of Bl1's skills are fairly tame, and are pretty much all just % increases to stats (some have interesting mechanics like activating after shileds go down, or for 7 seconds after a kill). Plus they seemed scared to let you use your action skill, Mordecia's bird is not worth 28 second cooldown, Rolands turret is definetly not worth 2 minutes. Luckily you could get 1 sec cooldown on Mord with the right build.
Bl2 (and especially DLC and Pre-Sequel) got much more confidant in players ability to understand mechanics and do basic math. Stuff like stacking buffs and cycling damage types, and builds where you hurt yourself for damage.
And people loved it, sure some didnt understand, but instead of scratching thier head and quiting (which is what most devs seem to think will happen if a skill is anything more complex than passive "+ stat") they went on the internet and asked how it worked, then ended up getting it.
Say what you will, but some of the characters were extremly complex and RPG elements, keeping track of 10+ context sensative buffs, as well as elemental weaknesses, critical multipliers and other stats while playing a FPS is really fun.
Its just a shame that when they got confidant in skilltree building they lost the ability to make a good loot system or a engaging, cohesive world.

Parts are weird, theres a lot of variations of base types, and each type has some variation possible with stats.

Only in 2, Bl1 had linear scaling and it was pretty much perfect unless you overleveled and one-shotted everything for half the game (numerical differences were tiny between levels, but after 4 levels difference there was a HUGE damage/resist buff to whoever was on top)
Pre-Sequel was still exponential, but a lot less steep than Bl2.

The problem isnt that it was exactly like 2, it was that the endgame was garbage compared to 2 and the loot system was "migth as well gibb" teir. Fuck the grinder, fuck the vending machines, and especially fuck that poor excuse for a raid. The botched dlc was the kiss of death for it, and nobody but 2k is to blame for that. Know what makes a open world good?
Variation, lots of secret areas/events/items to explore and find, and NPCs doing their daily routines around the map to make the world feel alive.
In Borderlands quest NPCs only exists inside towns, and outside literally everything alive is hostile. Also every area in the games are straigh passages, they are not hard to find and really obvious so theres no exploration, just walk from one point to another.
