"Realism" in games usually means the elements that are against the player are at a realistic level, but you don't get the options you'd have to deal with it in reality.
ie.
>enemy can kill you with a single bullet
>you have to to shoot them for half an hour
>enemy's armor deflects your light attacks
>you are unable to target the blatant holes and weak spots in their armor

Until they come up with proper VR, let games be games.

Armor has weak points in the joints. Or you can shove the sword through their helm openings.
>>
>>315614434
>A weapon is a weapon
By that line of reasoning a nuclear weapon and a 9mm are both applicable to do the same job. Every job has its tool.
>>
>>315614897
actually hitting a moving target into those joints and especially into the helmet opening is nearly impossible, you would need to wrestle them and use a specific heavy dagger
>>
>>315611813
Yes and no. It's good for games to incorporate certain elements of realism into it, but it'd be hard to just go full-reality on it if you still want to make it fun.

I mean just the whole basic concept of a game, a thing you can save/load, repeat and start over breaks realism already.
>>
>>315611813
>Take a swing. It just clanks off his armor. At least the sword doesn't break this time
>die because I can't do any damage
You can get that kind of realism playing Age of Decadence.

Sometimes you just can't get through your opponents armour. You may have to try to maked aimed strikes between it, but then it's easier for the enemy to dodge or block those time-consuming attacks. So you may die.
Or you'll have to try to dent the shit out of their armour and then bash them to death inside it.
>>
>>315614784
nnnnnnnnnnope

But still, a naked marathon sprinter would be able to outmaneuver someone in heavy armor when it comes to just running away right?

I just want more games where you can throw poop at enemies to kill them

many types of interlocking plated armor can be easily damaged and rendered inflexible by denting them at the joints which can be done with really any hard striking object

like a rock even

a naked guy with a carpenter's hammer could take down some nerd in plate armor

not to mention it really does not make you a more effective grappler, which is something it also offers you no real protection from.
>>
>>315617459

Yeah you could be pretty effective with nearly anything, but the constant rebalancing got really boring, even when you learned to use something they change it and youcan start over

True, but the original claim was that you shouldn't use a sword (as one would regularly use it) against an armored opponent.

And even if you do half-hand a sword, it will still be just an improvised blunt weapon and incomparable to using an actual mace or hammer.
>>
>>315618920
>Half-hand

Mordhau, that is.
>>
>>315618920
when facing an armored opponent you dont use a sword like you would with an unarmored opponent, you would use it as a crowbar to wrestle him down.
remember that you dont pick your enemies on the battlefield.
>>
>>315611813
there are skyrim mods that add some "realism" when it comes to armor.

Heavy armor offers way more resistance but slows you down more, i think its possible for enemies to stagger just from hitting you with small weapons even.

Better than vanilla combat at least.
>>
>>315619061
Yeah, but if you use a weapon like a mace, it will be equally effective against unarmored as well as armored opponents.
>>
>>315620007
you seem to be forgetting that a mace has a handle where a sword has a blade.
a sword is easier to handle because of how balanced it is.
so using a sword as a mace isnt as effective as an actual mace.
>>
>>315620007
Not really. A 1h mace won't have the power a 2h sword would when swinging. Not to mention less range. A 2h mace would do better but be heavier and prone to quicker opponents geting thru.

The enitre point of weapon variety was nothing was perfect. You didn't go in with just 1 weapon. You went in with a few and used what worked best in the situation.

This.

I really dig the combat in AoD, it's realistic in a good way.

You can spend ages trying to kill someone with heavy armor by trying to slash it, but it won't take more than 1-3 hit to the vital spots to kill anyone in the game.

Daggers can bypass armor, spears can keep your enemies at bay, hammers dent armor like crazy and such.

Fast, regular and strong attack, each useful against different types of enemies. Aimed attacks to bypass armor entirely if one isn't wearing a helmet, to strike vital points or fuck the ability to hit/dodge.

Heavy armor doesn't slow you down that much AP wise, but it makes you shit at dodging.

Ranged is OP s long as you are at range.

Can carry preloaded crossbow to unload them all at once.

Repeating crossbows have shit range, shit damage and are generally shit unless used against unarmored peasants or if you coat the bolts in poison.

Fuck realism in games revolving around war, unless I get to be the commander.
There's a point where if you make things too real, you lose all the fun. If war was so fun, we'd all be out fighting for our countries instead of having fun playing video games.

I would quite like to play a game where you're fucked if you take anything but the most trivial damage, but your character would need to have sufficient moves and options to try to avoid getting hurt.

I think the Fallout series or something similar could do with that, maybe item scarcity and stealth would mean something if bullets were straight-up lethal.

Also maybe that leather gear would be less popular if the only metal part was on one shoulder and any non-armour piercing shot anywhere else was fuck you.

Imagine if a fight with some raiders would actually be a scary prospect.

Mount and blade has crushing, piercing, and slashing damage. If you attack someone in full armor with piercing or slashing you will deal no damage. Its not exactly that simple but simply put thats how it is.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

>it will be equally effective against unarmored as well as armored opponents.
No it wouldn't. Blunt weapons didn't ignore armour. Rarely were they even able to dent armour. It was simply that more force would be translated through to the person underneath than with an edge. The armour still massively reduced the damage. The most effective method against plate armour was always grappling and stabbing into weak and open points, it's just that blunt weapons were the easiest method to do at least some damage (and usually to attempt concussion rather than damage the body or limbs).

How about the game has grapples and can be countered and blocked etc, like in wrasslin games, the idea is that with heavily armoured enemies you would wear them out with attacks and then grapple them to hit the small exposed areas, which is the only way to actually kill them. Never seen a game with melee weapon combat really do "grabs" even though it would make sense.

I mean, a sig and an ar15 shoot the same caliber, so so long as you fire the same load (M855, m193, mk262) it should be the same effect, given minor differences in velocity due to barrel length.

a katana and a mace do damage in different ways.

Or a crossbowman.

And I don't really see how cover would help- if I'm read to shoot, what stops me from getting close enough to shoot and running away again? Surely getting hit with an arrow/bolt would be enough to buy me enough time to run away again.

Are there any historical sources describing a 1v1 duel between heavily armored knight and a longbowman/crossbowman? It must have happened at one point.

Daily reminder that the english bow>french knight is literally wwii paratrooper>german tank propaganda.

The only function of the longbow was as deterrent for unarmored cavalry charges in conjunction with stakes.

The sources from the time talk about arrows bouncing off plate and the men at arms worrying about arrows slipping inside the visor and nothing else.

Th english knights who did the actual killing wore heavier armor than the french.

Also, the english lost most of the time and ultimately lost the war, that's why the couple battles they won are so remarkable. And most of the deaths were pows, that is people who survived the arrows, survived the melee and ultimately surrendered, but were slaughtered while in chains.

In addition the french tried using longbow mercenaries later on and they were literally a joke with songs and illustration being made about how useless bowmen were.

And Warren Ellis is an edgelord
