The Desmond plot was bullshit. It was as unwelcome in AC3 as it was in the original AC when everyone threw a bitch fit about it. I don't know if you were on the internet in 2007, but everyone complained about the sci-fi elements, since the game was sold not just primarily, but exclusively as a period piece stealth/platformer game. Then it turned out you weren't actually playing as Altair, you were actually playing as Blandy Blanderson from Blandsville as he played as Altair.

Black Flag was heaps of fun, but it highlights the main issue with AC games now - they're boring.
Edward already knows most of the assassin moves, so you don't get to play with new mechanics. After about halfway I was bored of being an assassin because it was the same thing everytime, sometimes with a new toy.
The Jackdaw on the other hand was heaps of fun. Start off with a piss-weak ship that you slowly build to become mighty and powerful. Ships you once ran in fear from become your bitch as your asrenal upgrades. It reminded me of AC I and II where you only have basic moves, but learn new and exciting ways to take out opponents. It was the sense of progression

If all the game was was sailing around, raiding ships, exploring small islands for treasure/maps/collectibles, I would have been perfectly OK with that. I didn't get into the Assassin's Creed games to listen to Nolan North smarm his way through another modern-day game; I got into Assassin's Creed because I wanted to explore historical periods and stab the occasional dude. I got back out of Assassin's Creed because while I want to do that, I don't want do that every single year in negligibly better iterations.
I might end up doing what most (rational) people end up doing with other yearly franchise released games and skip most of them and just buy one every three or four years.

Although our opinions are wildly different, I think I might do the same.
I love the sci-fi bullshit, but if the game is shit, I can just watch videos to keep up to date with that part of the story, while I play only the good AC games.
The only good one, that I haven't played yet, seems to be Black Flag, for the pirate ship aspect alone, but I'll keep up to date with AC, and see if any of the newer games seem interesting in any way, from now on.Sengoku-era/Three Kingdoms focused game could breath some life into the series, fingers crossed.
