I still can't get over the ending, it feels like there was a lot more that was supposed to happen but the DLC fiasco and the game being rushed made sure we will never see it.I believe it's Lailah who makes a comment that Sorey would have to sleep for centuries -or- until someone more powerful comes along and handles his job for him. That one comment led me to believe there would be a way for them to get him back and the DLC might even cover it. But then you have the quick Mikleo scene at the end that doesn't play into any of that.

Yeah, it deals with them having a little journey directly related to the ending of the main game and would spoil everything if you play it ahead of time.
It does howeverleave off on a massive cliffhanger that adds some doubt and questions to the main games ending but unfortunately the rest of the DLC was cancelled and we will never know what was going to happen.

In zestiria at least it's more about how they clearly setup situations that are leading towards two characters having a special moment and then drop it before it gets there. In a few situations they even have another character step in and break up the scene as a joke.
I don't require romances in games but this just gets really frustrating, maybe it's due to them dropping the dual route system, who knows.

Xillia's Shop Level system had the same problem as it ruined the excitement of getting to a new town and seeing what equipment they sale. It was the same shit everywhere.

Sometimes the Tales team just make bad decisions, if you're going to scrap a more involved shop system due to lack of time it's better to just use a boring progression instead of simplifying whatever your original plan was to a such an extent that it's inferior to the standard rpg system.

Vesperia's was exactly the opposite.
Every new weapon was super exciting because of the skill system being tied to it. Even if you backtracked and found one you missed in a dungeon or shop you where happy.
I mean, it was literally FFIX's weapon system verbatim, but yeah. It was awesome.

Zestiria is abysmal. Vesperia isn't that great but at least it still has an overworld. Symphonia is probably the best Tales game, it's not any better mechanically than Abyss but Symphonia's characters are actually endearing instead of a bunch of stupid assholes you hate so Symphonia gets the nod.

If you like tales games in general you'll enjoy a playthrough for sure, if you are new to tales games it might actually be a decent starting point. If you're a tales fanboy then you'll hate it just like every other tales game that isn't your favorite.
