Why is Cyberpunk so underrepresented in video games?
Will the new Deus Ex help popularize the genre?
Also general Cyberpunk thread.

>Why is Cyberpunk so underrepresented in video games?

Because it's not popular comparatively to other genres.
>>
>>315576701
But why? It's so good.
>>
>>315576605
every new AAA game has adopted the "cyber" feel ie. the new cods
Maybe not cyberpunk high tech low humanity in the city feel, but it's there... Crackdown 3 and CDPR's Cyberpunk (whenever that it coming out) is also on the way. also this but

Is cyberpunk the most comfy genre?
>>
>>315578273
Dystopian futures are never "comfy."
>>
>>315578273

It's supposed to be the opposite of comfy.
>>
>>315576605
Cyberpunk was a really popular 20 years ago because people looked at the new millennium like a huge jump to a new technological era, but it never happened because the Cold War ended, and there was no reason to improve the thecnology. Sure, we have archieved amazing things like partial virtual reality, but its 2015. In the late 80's we'll have already robotic arms and shit like that

cyberpunk is mad comfy
>>
>>315578273
I hate this catchall "comfy" shit.

It's exciting. It's aesthetically pleasing. It's even a little scary sometimes.

I get the same feeling every time I find myself in a major city. It's crowded and cramped but the brilliance of the highrises and lights blot out the nervousness. There's a thrilling sense of danger and action - you could get mugged by any random nigger in the street at any time of day. You could disappear and no one would ever notice.
>>
>>315579221

i fucking love comfy things and i can appreciate cyberpunk, but liking something a lot doesn't make it 'comfy' automatically

if you find comfort in cyberpunk there's probably something wrong with you
>>
>>315578709
But technology has a new reason to grow, consumerism and cheap labor/resources. Even 12 years ago if you had shown someone (the average person at least) an iphone their heads woulds have exploded, and now it's something even the poor have.

Comfy is something that is visually pleasing and relaxing for me. Something thats not stressful. For example, the Alice Pod Gardens in Deus Ex HR. That place's atmosphere was so chill and interesting to me.
>>
>>315579406
it dont have an iphone : )
>>
>>315576761
It's very repetitive. If you want to stay true to the genre, there's really not a whole lot of room for creativity.
>>

WHY IS EVERYTHING YELLOW
>>
>>315579914
Yellow is a good color m8. Its the game's filter. I think there was a remastered version without it.
>>
>>315576605

It was popular 20 years ago then its time passed. Its legacy is Steampunk and all the other derivative genres with '-punk' at the end.

>>
>>315576605
cyberpunk is hard to make, easy to fuck up. no proof that it has any real sizable audience--only that they are very loud.
unless the devs are into the theme it's much safer and better to go traditional fantasy than generic scifi than cyberpunk/steampunk.

nigga you literally carry the internet around in your pocket every day. so do most people who live in a 1st-world country.

the gap between "mega rich" and "everyone else" has been widening since the Reagan administration, and corporations are constantly circumventing national/international law. TPP is going to blur that line even further.

>Why is Cyberpunk so underrepresented
Fuck off. I'm tired of cyberpunk kids like you crying that their genre is overlooked. When there's dozens of other genres worse off.
>>
>>315576605
Because it's only a specific sub-genre of sci-fi and I wouldn't even say it's that underrepresented it's been getting alot of attention lately, their are more cyberpunk themed games than say pirate or ninja games which are two truly underused vidya settings.
>>
Every cyberpunk story ever:

To be fair, while Blade Runner had a lot of those things, they weren't the focus of the story. And are based on 'Noir' stereotypes, which was the inspiration for Blade Runner.

We have two High Profile Cyperpunk games coming out soon, not to mention loads of indy games.

>>
>>315597445

Fucking laserrifle one shotting from across the map.
>>
Got nothing against cyberpunk but why do fags on here obsess over it so much? What is so great about Hong Kong slums and cyborgs that give everyone here such a hard-on?
>>
>>315597014
Blade Runner was also the main trope setter for the genre, so we can hardly blame it for tropes that subsequent entries overuse.
>>
>>315598215

Guns, smoking and dark environments. Its basically the trifecta combining all of a young males obsessions. Legitimized by a genre.

What's funny is, even outside of the cyberpunk genre, most western games are focusing on all those things anyway.
>>
>>315598351

I agree. I was kind of pointing that out. That most of what people consider 'mandatory' for a cyberpunk is athstetic based. Overlooking what made Blade Runner such a good movie (good direction, characters and story). Most people who obsess over wanting a cyberpunk are just wanting something that looks cyberpunk. But not story content.
>>
>>315583486
Writing a character who was purposely made as a sex toy (or any other single-purpose robot), but wants to be treated as a person, contrasted with humans who don't care about anything about getting laid/having kids, arguing over how much civil rights bots deserve, showing how comfortable people feel around sex-bots in and out of sexual situations...

That's hard work, buddy.

We'll just give you another kuudere battle-buddy which learns the meaning of love because the protagonist picks the right dialogue choices a few times.
>>
>>315581706
Just sounds like dystopian scifi with some post apocalyptic elements probably not a specific name for it.
>>
>>315598742
This, the thematic elements are what make cyberpunk what it is not the look. Mirror's Edge especially the upcoming one is a good example of cyberpunk done without the stereotypical cyberpunk aesthetic.
>>
>>315579402
Cyberpunk is comfy like how chilling in the zone in stalker is oddly comfy
>>
I prefer Cyberpunk concepts in bright settings. There needs to be more of that than just Noir dark cyberpunk.
>>
>>315600425
Well some Cyperpunk has both. Take Hengsha is DE:HR. Poor people live in the classic looking dark and gritty cyperpunk city, while the rich live above them in a city that looks almost Utopian.
>>
>>315600773
>while the rich live above them

Am I the only one sick and tired of this?

Give me a dystopia where the poor and downtrodden live close to the sky and the rich and privileged live beneath them.
>>
>>315601240
That really wouldn't make sense, unless the air was so polluted that the rich decided to live completely underground or something.

because most cyberpunk games are shit, I mean I really like the aesthetic but the actual games blow, except for system shock and the first deus ex what other genuinely good game is there?

and please dont say human revolution, its a game where I can walk into a police station kill everyone and move on like nothing happened, and its ending is the most stupid shit ever, seriously what kind of a studio has 3 giant buttons - "edit/upload/delete"?

couldnt he just approach the keyboard and show up a list?
>>
Because its a huge risk to develop a cyberpunk game with various things that make the game good overall.
It will need a great score that fits the theme of the game. A likable MC/the player's character, a great setting, and great designs.

There are a TON of elements required to make a great cyberpunk game and because it needs to be fantastic to make money, the budget to start out with will be large. I'm not saying its impossible, its just a huge risk for triple A industries to do it. Besides, we got Mass Effect 4 (idk if you count that as cyberpunk, probably not. Just sci-fi)
Cyberpunk 2077, and probably Prey 2? coming out.

We probably lacked the technology to create good looking cyberpunk games for consoles (Deus Ex had a shitload of filter, I'm talking bout a cyberpunk game filled with neon lights and dynamic weather effects).

Yes, PCs are held back by Consoles, believe it or not... unless the game devs make a game exclusive for PC, which is very unlikely due to the cost.
>>
There need to be more science fiction games with transhumanist themes that aren't necessarily tied to dark, grimy back streets and rain-drenched, neon-lit high tech low life cityscapes.

How are the themes in SOMA? It's hardly comfy, but the premise was interesting when I first saw gameplay.
>>
>>315576605
Because the theme is either merged with general sci-fi, or that it became so normal it simply be referred to as sci-fi. Subcategories are dying out basically.
>>
>>315576605
Don't worry Pham real life has got you covered. companies have already developed tazer and tear gas drones and the TPP/SOPA/CISPA whatever the fuck shit they wanna call it next time they try will eventually pass and privacy will be completely dead. real life is going to be Cyberpunk.
