Because Nvidia is notorious for keeping up with AMD flagships over a long period of time. For example: the 290/290x were meant to be GTX 780 competitors, they would trade blows in benchmarks usually. Now? The 290x is trading blows with the 980 in newer games in 2015, NVIDIA has no excuse, honestly.

Temperatures are not the problem.
Any GPU can have managable temperatures if the heatsink is big enough and the fans are fast enough.
The problem is how much haet is getting dumped into the case.
1 gpu is fine, but with 2 shit can compound quite badly if you dont have a jet engine worth of case fans.
The only way to know how much heat your GPU is dumping into your case is power consumption.

>>
>>315564659
You gonna get fucked once Nvidia stopps the 970 with drivers from shitting itself.

See shit like the BO3 beta without proper drivers. The game is trying to use the last 0.5GB VRAM and it starts stuttering like hell.
>>
>>315564770
That's a pretty good discount

Honestly unless you need a new card right now, wait until next year when they all get a die shrink and new memory
>>
>>315564868

>>
>>315564659
they already advertise Pascal with features they removed in Maxwell to get extra efficiency. Also doesn't comply by some optional DX12 rules.
We'll see.

I'm a bit interested how devs will work with this card. I mean in DX12 devs can allocate memory themselves. But I guess we'll have to rely on nVidia drivers.
>>
>>315564770
I agree with anon above me. If you can help it, wait for the next year.
Even if you don't have money on HBM2 card, die shrink and GDDR5x will make a difference.

Same. I got a 980 on launch day and it's been great. No reason to upgrade until the HBM 2.0 cards come out. Even then I'm sure the 980 will be more than capable of playing everything on Ultra or slightly below.

The next gen of GPUs should be a nice jump up and I'll probably get whatever is the best flagship when they drop though.

>>
>>315566470
>demanding
You mean unoptimized
>>
>>315565643
MOAR vram has always been pretty useless.
Graphics cards usually have the amount of VRAM their GPU can manage.
A 9800gt wont run modern games slowly because it has 512MB of vram (did those things have 768? i cant remember), it wouldn't do even slightly better with 16GB of vram because it's GPU can't load that much data fast enough.
There as some graphics cards that are made with memory limitations, of which the 970 doesn't seem to be.
The 960 on the other hand, that 128bit bus is not doing it any favours.

>motherboard has 10 sata ports
>why even use more than two right?
>>

I just bought a new r9 290 for 200 bucks on that newegg sale

Feels fuckin good, I'll probably keep that bitch in there till the fury is under 300
>>

Because a 660 is more powerful than consoles anyway.

>meme hardware
I'll stick with what I have

>>315571167
Why buy one with that many when a NAS is a better investment anyhow?

Mismatched GPUs can be used for gaming with nivida to a ridiculous degree.
look up "dedicated Physx card" and educate yourself.
On top of that, brand of GPU rarely matters with SLI, you can even SLI a 4gb revision of a card with a 2gb revision, it's just the 4gb card get's locked to 2gb.

This desu imo senpai
>>
>>315571335
It's still a very bad decision, especially using a fucking reference card.
>>
>>315571552

please explain the negative effects of having mismatching brands of the same GPU
>>
>>315571552
The dude can do what he wants.
Might have already had the evga card and the reference card went on sale as they tend to do and decided to add more processing power to his system.
If you put the reference on on the bottom you wont even run into the problem where the intake get's blocked.
You sure are grasping at straws now. What's your next problem, oh computer genius?

one will run slightly hotter

big fucking deal

you seriously have no idea what youre talking about
>>
>>315572238

>inferiorly cooled card

fix'd, theres literally nothing wrong with using two different cards using the same PCB
>>
Anons, what card should I get to run a Vive once theyre out?

I'm probably looking at getting new everything since everything in my PC is 4 or more years old
>>
>>315572238
Reference cards actually have a pretty neet feature no one seems to acknowledge, they vent heat out the back of the case instead of just blowing it around inside the case, they are a pretty good choice for ultra compact builds because of this.
And i guess you didn't really trying on your next straw, huh? ">b-but sales" is not a really elegant way of disregarding one of the most important things about a product, price.

>>315573382

bought ref 290 specifically for this. Have an NCASE.

My setup is treating me just fine for now but I'm thinking of building a new box once VR starts going retail and the next gen of video cards are available.

The Asrock M8 caught my eye a bit back when it was on sale for around $300 because it came with a surprisingly good motherboard and power supply.
Shipping to my country killed the savings for me though, sadly.
I'd really like a smaller computer though.

Way too much money despite the fact no games need it.

>but I want 4k

Well go for it, I'd rather buy a bunch of other shit instead.
