The problem is I get kinda terrified of going online and playing but it's the only way cause I don't live in a city with an arcade scene.

It would be worthwhile to play Super Turbo, Alpha series, or 3 online if you were going to prepare for 5.
Super Turbo HDR and 3 have console versions you can get on PS3 and 360 but I don't know how many people still play HDR. Plenty of people still play 3 plus you have close to 20 years of resources to figure out everything about it.

A cancel is when you cancel the animation recovery of an action for whatever reason, if you ever played a 3D platformer game chances are you've done a lot of jump cancels.
>>
As soon as you explain why you're on /v/ instead of playing video games.

Also to answer your other question, no you don't need a fight stick, fight stick is for people who learned how to play on arcades, it won't automatically make you play better, play with whatever you feel comfortable with, many pro players play with Xbox 360 controllers for example.

Nigga "gud" is not an end. That kind of thinking is what gets people to 5 million BP and get stomped in tournaments in SF4.

It's the thrill of the fight you gotta think about. Enjoy these games and have fun and you'll go farther than what some people think the bare minimum of "gud" is.

Maybe that's why. They fuck up anything that isn't a fighter and when they lose a 1 v 1 game, they have to admit someone is just better than them at the moment and they just want the quickest way to being the "better" player.

Anyone who plays long enough will realize you just have to play more and do a little better, and there will always be people that can kick your ass.

Fighting games are like playing the guitar-everyone wants to be good at it, and it must be a great experience to be good at it, but it requires a shitload of effort, and even practicing simple chords every day is more fun than playing fighting games just to go into Training mode and practice ridiculous combos. At least, that's how it feels for a beginner.

>even practicing simple chords every day is more fun than playing fighting games just to go into Training mode and practice ridiculous combos

You don't need to d that at all. You can go VERY far with just simple combos, learning to play against other people is much more important after you learn the basic motions (which shouldn't take you that long).
>>
>>315553414
>>315553314
Pretty much. Everybody wants instant gratification and don't really understand the concept of losing based solely on their own lack of skill, so they immediately overreact or give up because it's unfamiliar territory.

It's just so hilarious how somebody asks "How do I become better at ____?" without stopping to think how silly that kind of question is. You get better at things by practicing, but modern gamers can't wrap their heads around this sort of things.

>At least, that's how it feels for a beginner.
Even if he doesn't (and I'm pretty sure he doesn't but I don't know) feel that way, a LOT of beginners think that to play a fighter you absolutely have to go to training mode and grind out combos to even think about competing. Hell, some of them prioritize that over learning how to block or properly move in the games.
>>
I don't find them to be all fun.

Whatever time I spend learning certain attacks or techniques is rendered meaningless when I when I go up again skilled CPUs or human players and from there it becomes button mashing.

>>315554039

>>
>>315554102
Hush, playing CPUs on the hardest difficulty is fine when you're literally just starting out. They're automated so you can get a basic idea of what beats what and some good defense practice.
>>
>>315554102

by skilled CPUs I mean anything above normal in single player or the like.

>>
>>315553314
>>315553817
I understand that I have to practice, and I don't even need to win. I just want to put up a fight. But I just don't know where to start practicing. Blocking? Combos?

It's just difficult throwing yourself into this when everyone else is so much more experienced. The opponent blocks me and then combos me to death, I don't even know how to react.
>>
>>315554250
I just found it funny he used the word skilled for CPU opponents.

>>315554315
You may not get top 8 at evo but you can do a lot with just simple combos if you are very good. Once you play to the point of being that good, spending a biut of time in training to learn a better combo won't be much t you anyway.

What's the difference between zoning and spamming?
>>
>>315554315
We're talking online right now, most people's ambitions end with winning 10 matches consistently. Blocking and proper movement will serve you much better than grinding out a bunch of long combo strings here.

>>315554372
What you need is a good universal damage dealer (like a normal or 2 into a special move) and a short way into your DM/ultra/overdrive/distortion/whatever. After that, learn to not fold under pressure like mashing or whatever.
>>
File: image.jpg (73 KB, 511x559) Image search: [Google]

Spamming doesn't exist is the difference. Play scummy as fuck and don't give two shits about what any bitch niggas have to say about it, especially these days since it's online and you don't have to worry about getting shanked behind the arcade because you tick throwed one too many times.
>>
>>315554372
Don't try to focus on everything at once. Try to focus on one thing and improve that one. Like for example play a session focusing on trying to defend better, another on trying to work on your pressure, another on your fireball game and spacing etc. You can't learn everything at once, have to go bit by bit.

When you lose to something THINK ABOUT WHY YOU JUST LOST. If you jumped in someone's anti air then you can realize you just got desperate and tried to land your jump in, so next time you'll think twice before jumping. If you keep getting grabbed realize you have to learn how to deal with grabs and look at how the opponent sets them up etc.

It's slow, it takes time, just keep at it.

Don't listen to them. The FGC are idiots who only want to keep out newbies but don't want to admit that everything about them is mechanically far more unintuitive than practically every other genre. If the games actually showed you why, say, you stuffed up a given input, or displayed hit/hurtboxes for you in game, or gave you a single player mode that progressively challenges your understanding of the game, acknowledged basic mindgames, or even just gave a proper walkthrough of the basic mechanics, there wouldn't be quite this issue. Instead, most of this shit is just invisible, and you're expected to just understand it all up front.

So far I've only had one person angrily PM me after a fight for taunting, even though you pretty much have to taunt to live as Q. Been watching Kuroda and Max for tips and tricks.

Fighting games and Smash is the only kind of games that interest me any more. Why? because i only enjoy competitive games. Shooters i suck at. MOBAs i just really don't care for. And i love the idea of learning fundamentals and things you can do when you get in certain situation and then sometimes doing something different to throw you opponent off their games. and then picking your character based on how you play and counter picking your opponent. For some reason this is all so damn fun to me. Its like every character is a deck of cards and you can play any card you want and also playing Rock Paper Scissors all at the same time. Any way, i like to think i'm pretty good at fightan gaims

3rd strike is a crapshoot, I don't even mean that in "3S is shit" kind of way, either you fight someone else who is on your level, or you fight someone who knows what they're doing which essentially means every option you can use is shut down because of parrying and the juggle system.

Not to say that doesn't happen in 2 or 4, but in 3 it feels even more oppressive than it should be especially when you got a CC yun on your ass

Ive been playing Tekken all my life ever since Tekken 2. The reason why i havnt perfected my skills is because ever since I started going online ive realized that fighting games are too spammer friendly, character learning curves are horribly unbalanced (i mastered paul in 2 days and got to warrior in 4, (ive played all my life as kaz and im still a fighter after 2500 online games and months of training) and berserker with asuka in 2 days. These kind of games rely way too much on guessing and memorizing as oposed to having skills or fun, and punish players for trying new things.

Tl;dr: fighting games are exactly the same as playing short matches of csgo. They are only fun when you win, skill is the smallest winning card and theres way too much memorizing shit. Looks like a job.

>>
I didn't like SF4 very much, so I just didn't play it. Then when I tried Ultra on PC the transition to Steamworks apparently fucked it up, causing lots of lag when I tried playing. I heard that it eventually got fixed but ended up driving most people away.
Xrd is cool, but it's too hard online and I stopped having fun losing. I don't feel good about giving up on it, but it felt kind of like trying to learn boxing by hopping in the ring with a semipro welterweight. I didn't see any reason to stick around.

Easy. Using characters with easy and effective mixups and spamming a series of combinations, every now and then switching to others.
Check jin in tekken, not many people use him because his juggling and launchers are weak (besides ewgf ofc).On the other hand, he has the best parry in tge game and superb poking. But he isnt very spammer friendly and is complicated, a great and fun character whicj requires skill.
Now lets look at lars: some of the safest launchers, best mixups, best crushers, great juggling damag, really fast and easy mixups and poking. Low skill yet easy to win with.
In the end you see 10 times more lars in mp than Jins.
Competitive wise. Why do you think Knee stopped maining Bryan Fury post tt2 nerf? Why do you think Scarfman in smash always uses the best char and never gets a main? Its all about picking a character with easy mixups and spacing and spamming the fuck out.
No skill just memory and luck.
>>
>>315560758

you're about 18 years too late to want to play catch up, on occasion you can find another beginner, but most players are pretty firmly familiar with the game.

>>315560758
