Don't make me laugh. Skyrim was dumbed down compared to stuff like Morrowind (which isn't so bad considering how bad Morrowind's systems were, but still) and Fallout 3 turned into a mediocre shooter running on an even worse engine. They didn't have the balls to go with a true turn-based system because casuals and console players wouldn't like it.
FO3 was boring, New Vegas got away with it because they had some good loot systems and mod support. FO4 banks on the "crafting" mechanic that's shoehorned into everything nowadays, so expect loot to be even more generic this time around.

I have always felt that /v/ really overblow the bad quality of Bethesda's writing, the majority of it isn't bad, it's just simple and generic.
The writing in Oblivion to Skyrim never bothered me because, really, apart from several quests that had some interesting narrative hooks, I would do the quests for something to do, and their rewards.

This is where I'll probably cop the most flak, I don't care about in depth RPG stat systems. If I want in depth, I'll go for a slow, isometric RPG like Pillars of Eternity, or the original Fallouts even. Bethesda doesn't make pure RPG's anymore, they make action adventure RPG's, everything serves the actual action adventure aspect of their games, including the RPG elements.
Complex is not better, simple is not worse, the term "dumbed down" is just idiots being butthurt over not having to make spreadsheets to make a character anymore.
Fallout 3 didn't bore me, and New Vegas adding great writing to the mix only made it better, Fallout 4 I accept will not provide that, but the overall gameplay improvements more than make up for it personally.

I disagree, New Vegas had better writing, but an overall worse world to explore. My favourite thing to do in a Bethesda game is to put a marker in an empty spot of the map and hike there with no fast travel, this provided the bulk of my Fallout 3 and Skyrim playtimes, but New Vegas kept railroading me away from some places and into others. Explorations felt far less natural, and more punishing, because New Vegas put all it's eggs into the questing basket. And it worked out well.
When I think of Fallout 4, I don't think of the writing, the only writing I am interested in is what they do with the main quest, because of the subject matter. I think of doing a circuit around the map, enjoying things as they come.

Your entire argument here is that certain people are butthurt because the game doesn't have numbers displayed on screen (as if that's what constitutes a "complex" game, like every old RPG was basically EVE Online and required months of playing to understand), and that Bethesda's wonderful alternative of limiting perks, different SPECIAL builds, and so on is just as effective as the gameplay in, say, FO1.

I'm right there with you OP, I've played every mainline Fallout game in order and had a blast.
Looking back, FO3 was kind of bland, but I think it's because Bethesda didn't really know where to take it.
FO4 has a very specific theme and style to it and I think it's going to be a special game.

Crysis came out in 2007 and runs on a toaster while managing to look better in every way to this.
