I think his approach to reviewing games is kind of incredible in its thoroughness, although even after spending hours talking about a game/series I think he has some trouble speaking about the game holistically and wrapping up his reviews with a sense of finality

it's like he can point out every minor detail of a game's design but can't use those parts to form in interesting opinion about said game
>>
Anyone else confused by his stance on Strange Journey? I thought he claimed to love it before but said in his latest stream on Halloween that he didn't see the hype behind it.

Either way he's definitely my favorite Youtuber and really the only Youtuber I can tolerate seeing posted about on /v/ at this point.
>>
>>315373901
He's okay but I fucking hate his accent. I got so tired of hearing "derk souls" in his commentary. Other than that though, he's alright
>>
I like his in depth reviews and I wish he'd do MGSV already.
>>
He is a faggot that talks too much.
>>
>>315375335

He's already said he wants to give MGSV more time to digest without rushing into a review and being unfair to it.
>>

>it's like he can point out every minor detail of a game's design but can't use those parts to form in interesting opinion about said game

Aside from the humor, that's why I like Plinkett's style more than Matthews. Matthew's great still, though I watched his MGS reviews recently and he had a lot less interesting/deep/analytical stuff to say about them compared to his Nintendo reviews.
>>
Boring cunt. Takes video games too seriously. Steals all his points from /v/ and reddit hivemind. Ugly voice. Probably shills the fuck out of himself on /v/ because he's "coincidentally" made appearances in threads about him, but I can't prove that.
>>
pretentious, presumptuous, uniformed, points out the obvious, boring, overly critical, nitpicky, and probably autistic
>>
> there are people that seriously listened to this faggot talk for 6 hours.
>>
>>315374582

It honestly feels like the only times he's done this well were the Ico/SOTC and Zelda series.

I want to see him branch out and do something less obvious. I get the fanfare of wanting to cover MGS and Mario, but I want to see him deal with something more difficult to unpack like Killer7.
>>
Who actually watches an hour long review of a game? I mean, you watch reviews so you know what to buy, but if you already know everything about a game because you watched some retard babble about it online for an hour, you'll already have the fresh car smell of the game ruined for you.

You do realize you can also watch game reviews AFTER finishing it to hear the opinions on others or maybe learn something you didn't know before. In-Depth reviews that spoiler the entire plot aren't meant to be purchase recommendations.

He sounds totally different if you hear him on a stream or something it's weird.

He's a decent reviewer but his DaS2 video (which is widely parroted here) was way off base. The more I watch it the more I take issue with some of his complaints, most of which are exaggerated nitpicks or flat out non-problems. If you watch his DaS playthrough, he defends some of the very same issues that he blasted in DaS2. DaS2 had a lot of legitimate problems but when he spends large portions of the video complaining about the bloody overlay on the boss cutscenes or Freja's laser attack or some other trivial bullshit, it's hard to take the rest of the review seriously.

>Hello ladies and gentlemen
>Hello ladies
Fuck off Matt you SJW pandering inclusive progressive cultural marxist. Did you know what the percentage of REAL gamers who are female is? You say ladies and gentlemen as if it's 50/50 but it's not. I've dated a few girls that were pretty far left and the heated debates stop very quickly because they stop being leftists once you've been dating them and having all of these heated arguments with them. If you know what you're talking about and you're passionate about it then they crumble very quickly. Any fun that you might get out of having heated debates with lefty women is always temporary at best because if you really care about what you believe then you end up naturally converting them because they get emotionally overwhelmed by how ridiculously intense you get about this. The problem is that so many men today are kind of effeminate and they don't really give a shit about their beliefs, if they even have any beliefs, so they end up fighting fire with apathetic appeasement and agreeing with her just to get her to shut up. When a man is passionate though and he fights fire with fire then it's like this little cat that's having a go at a lion and suddenly the lion gets up and just roars at it.

>complains about DaSII areas being disconnected and ignores that the entire second half of DaS is disconnected
>whenever DaS reuses enemies or has shitty areas it's just a "reality of game development" and "publisher's fault"
>whines that DaSII has too many multi-enemy encounters when DaS has plenty of examples of the exact same thing, even as early as the undead fucking burg

>>315377848
>>315377928
He prefaces it by saying that he still thinks DaSII is a good game, but if that is the case then he should have minimized his smaller complaints and put more emphasis on his larger, legitimate ones. That his video comes off as more negative than he intended is 100% his fault.

Some of his "complaints" had oddly specific parameters as well. For example, he makes the point that DaS had more areas available to the player after getting to Firelink than DaSII. Well, that's technically true, but in DaSII the player can complete the Tower of Flame and use the Dragonrider souls to buy the cat ring and move the contraption in Majula. Then, they'd have four areas immediately available to them, all of which are much more balanced for new characters than some of the areas in DaS (like the Catacombs). It's a bit of a pointless complaint when a 20 minute time investment to clear the starting area (akin to clearing the Undead Asylum if you ask me) immediately gives you access to three more areas.

This faggot gets posted about way too much on /v/.
You want to discuss his latest six hour review of [insert game]? Cool, find a discussion about that game or start a thread about that game, and then link in whatever you think he made a good or bad point about.
If you start a thread with his review as the main topic, it becomes less about the game and more about the autists following their shitty e-celebrity.

A thread about actual vidya is far, far better use of space than anything on someone's persona, be it a YouTube upload or twitter bullshitting or whatever the fuck else.
Plus there is the problem of people not even just starting a single thread on the guy, it has to be fucking six at bare minimum.

>if only 4chan wasn't flooded with endless FO4 and Undertale threads
Well I am not saying they are not shit too.
I wilfully ignored Undertale but at least FO4 is understandable and could be expected to have people fired up. I do very much wish people were not spamming threads about it endlessly, but that's what happens with every big release (MGSV, Witcher 3 as particularly big ones this year) and at least they ARE vidya.
Let me put it this way: I'd rather see six FO4 leak/discussion/shitposting threads in the catalog than six 'it's up' threads. Both are very bad, but I have my preference.

>a particularly intense case of console war
Honestly at this point my eyes just automatically skip over them, especially if it is just a thread with 'X won' with a sad/violent Pepe. I don't really think anyone even cares about the actual consoles or even the companies any more.
>>
>>315378245
He brings up the reused bosses in DaS and says that they're bad. He defends the Stray Demon slightly because it's optional, but shits on Firesage (the only thing he says in its defense is that it's not a crucial boss anyway).

He does talk about his disappointment that DaS's later areas are disconnected, and offers suggestions about how they could have done it.

The complaint about too many multiple enemies in DaSII wasn't that great in the first place, but DaS's multi enemy encounters are definitely fine for the most. Most of them are made with the idea of using weak enemies in multiples to create a different challenge than 2 normal enemies.

The whole video comes off as less harsh because he assumes a lot of the flaws are due to time and budget constraints rather than poor decisions, but there's little inconsistency when it comes to pointing out problems in both the games. Another thing to consider is that a decent chunk of his DaSII video is spent complaining about how it failed to address the problems that Dark Souls had as a sequel.
>>
>>315378981
>a decent chunk of his DaSII video is spent complaining about how it failed to address the problems that Dark Souls had as a sequel
Not really, the only time he says that is when he's talking about the covenants (which are objectively better in DaSII by a large margin).

How the fuck are DaS's multi-enemy encounters better? There are dozens of instances of several strong enemies rushing you at once. Like I said, as early as the undead burg you're forced to fight multiple enemies with shields, large weapons, or shields and large weapons. Not to mention shit like the channeler room in the Parish, or other potential "starting areas" where the player is going to get gangbanged hard, like the Catacombs.

Most of the multi-enemy counters in DaSII are weak shitty enemies as well. Hollows, Royal Soldiers, Varangians, whatever. There are a few instances of multiple large enemies but he never made a solid argument for why that's a bad thing anyways.

Complaining about any of the bosses in DaSII is honestly fucking ridiculous considering that half the bosses in DaS are absolute dogshit. DaSII might have overdone it on the large humanoids with a big weapon, but at least they're consistently challenging fights. I'd rather have Smelter Demon and Velstaldt than Bed of Chaos and Seathe.

yea like that elevator in dark souls 2 that crushes you if you take it all the way to the top. or the floor that collapses under you and drops you in front of a boss with 40% health. or the first encounter with seathe where he gives you the illusion of a fair boss fight and then annihilates you. i hated all those cheap deaths in dark souls 2 that totally were not in the first game
>>
>>315380549

Not that guy, but this chain has kind of ignored the whole fact that Dark Souls 2 has a "2" at the end of it. The instances where bosses are reused need to be going down, not up.

Dark Souls 2 did the opposite of this. In Dark Souls, there are five bosses with multiple enemies. In Dark Souls 2, this number jumps up to ten or eleven, and that's before DLC comes into the picture. One of them is the exact setup from Dark Souls, Gargoyles on the tower with the same models, theme and everything. Instead of them having less health past the first, there are five of them with the same HP.

No one is going to sit here and pretend the Capra Demon was a good encounter. It was shit. No one is going to pretend that reusing the Asylum Demon so many times was a good idea. The criticisms of Dark Souls 1 are pretty thorough, I have no idea why when you suggest Dark Souls 2 maybe should've done better than that, all of the sudden people get touchy. Do people really think a bossfight that's just rats or more Gargoyles is fine because w-well the first game did it t-too.

No shit. I expect something less bland out of a sequel, not more.
