I live in Japan and have decided to buy a Japanese PS2 to play a bunch of games I missed out on as a nintendo kid
My question is, what model of PS2 is the best? Is there anything I should be careful of when buying a used PS2?

No there is not a flaw with the slim system that will cause disc scratching.

HDD is an external disc memory for the PS2 fat. One PS2 game that needs the HDD is Final Fantasy 11. Sony has shut down the Final fantasy 11 servers making the game unplayable.

HDD means Hard Disk Drive. You can load your games from it with HD loader.
