Put it this way. If you can get a 3DS Xl or new 3DS with the appropriate firmware (mainly 4.5) you can get a Gateway or other flashcart so you can play games for free.
That's when it's worth it IMO.
Also hacking the 3DS allows homebrew which can allow GBA games and eShop games etc
