How would a continuation even work? I mean, I'm not saying there's any possiblity Phantom Pain wasn't the entry in the series, but to me it seriously felt like nothing but table setting for a more cinematic entry into how Big Boss actually establishes Outer Heaven... but how could he be the protagonist of a game while he's doing all of that? It seems like Peace Walker was truly the last possible entry wherein Big Boss could be the protagonist. Metal Gear Solid 6 could only include Solid Snake, but it feels like Kojima still would have liked to divulge into what goes on with Eli more. It really sucks that MGSV was so incomplete, man.

People still get this wrong, and there is no other reason then you not paying attention.
Big Boss establishes Outer Heaven. They tell you this multiple times. The whole time Venom is doing his thing and building Mother Base in the Seychelles, Big Boss is creating Outer Heaven.
Big Boss then needs to go undercover in the U.S. where he takes control of FOXHOUND, but in order to have eyes on both sides of the world, he puts Venom in charge of Outer Heaven and Diamond Dogs is absorbed into Outer Heaven.
When Solid Snake ruins Big Boss and Venom's plans, Big Boss leaves FOXHOUND and the US to maintain the illusion of his "death," rescues people and resources from Outer Heaven before it self-destructs and they flee to Zanzibarland.
My only hopes for the future of the franchise are that I could get excited about are:
1.) Game featuring the Boss during WWII and exploring her relationship with The Sorrow and creating CQC and special forces.
2.) Game featuring Liquid Snake while he was in the SAS hunting down the mobile Scuds (metal gear copies?) or after joining Foxhound with the other MGS1 foxhound members being featured prominently.
3.) Remakes of MG1 and MG2
4.) MGRR prequel about what happens to Raiden just prior to MGS4
5.) MGRR prequel focusing on Grey Fox
6.) ...??? I want there to be another possibility for a game with Solid Snake, but I just can't imagine a scenario where that could be done tastefully without it feeling cheap or like fan-service the entire time. Maybe someone way more creative than I am could come up with something, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen :(
