Map Testing
>In this phase of the development, the major work being done is the map testing. Map testing will define the different areas to make sure they are neither too big, nor too small to get to that Goldilocks zone. This consists of looking at the layout of a certain space, and experimenting to make necessary alterations. For example, an outside area may feel too open. That space may be reduced by 20%, and the number of people there increased from 10 to 16, to affect the proper consistency and density of the area.
>All elements in the following screen shots are still in testing. Objects are being used as place holders, like the men in black suits, and Ryo is also an older model. Backgrounds and buildings are also still in the development stage and will see reworking. Shots for the two battle scenes were taken at angle to avoid spoilers as much as possible.

A lot of people that never played Shenmue don't realize that it actually has gameplay. QTES were a very small part of the game and helped advanced the story in ways that didn't completely take you out of the game while watching cutscenes.
Shenmue has Virtua fighter fighting mechanics with free flow battles, Exploration, mini games, etc.
It's more of a slow paced adventure game, it's nothing really like Yakuza at all and i hate when they're both compared.

I'll tell you exactly what happened since i was apart of the fan campaign on Shenmuedojo.
After years of asking Sega about Shenmue the community started to aim for the big 3 console manufacturers.
Of course none responded until there was an article that was posted around 2 years ago with Sony employee Adam Boyes.
Boyes was saying that they were going to take request as they were interested to see what games fans wanted the most. The Shenmue community quickly mobilized and focused their efforts on bombarding Boye's twitter account as well as Gio.
About a year later another article comes out with Adam Boyes saying that Yakuza and Shenmue were the most requested games by far and that they would be announcing more about them soon.
Fast forward to that December and we got the Yakuza 5 localization news at the Sony experience.
Fast forward to June and we got the Shenmue 3 announcement.

Shenmue 1 actually sold very well (a million copies) with Shenmue 2 only doing terribly because of it only being available in NA on the Xbox in it's very early years.

One of my favorites but you either love it or hate it. Just emulate or get a dc and burn the game and find out for yourself.
It's basically a semi open world in a small city in Japan with a ridiculous amount of detail. You can open fucking individual drawers and open every closet for no fucking reason if you want to.
The fighting mechanics are similar to Virtua fighter games since it's by the same creator. The game plays out almost as a murder mystery where you're asking people around the town for information about your father's killer and what they saw.
Mini games, exploration, fightan, puzzles, arcade machines, and npcs that have a day/night schedule with a full background story on who they are.

It's adventure game that have open world style, some minigames, and some fighting. It's very detailed for its time and even for today (like it's based on real life 80s time of Yokosuka, down to the weather on each days, or how the arcade games are real life SEGA arcades that you can actually play). It's also extremely comfy, hell, the game is made so you don't have to do everything in hurry and just enjoy stuff.
I would say it's aged. The controls are stiff, the areas are small and essentially quite linear, and compared to today's games there's not a lot of contents. But it's extremely well made and you just need to play it.

this was literally the plan for the original Shenmue games
the first couple games would be the big budget releases with all the content and then consecutive games (of which many were planned) would be released quickly using the assets they had established
Yakuza's a yearly franchise, Shenmue was intended to be a yearly franchise but never got there
both are frankly better off not being a yearly franchise and I wish the Sega devs would stop forcing Yakuza to be an annual release thing already

Fortunately a game like Shenmue isn't nearly as expensive these days due to all the advances we've had in middleware. They had to make the engine for Shenmue 1 from scratch, while with Shenmue 3 they're using UE4. They're just trying to make another game like Shenmue and not GTAV, so I think they'll do fine.

People forget that a large portion of funds went into developing shit like day/night cycles, weather, scrapping the saturn version and starting over on the dc, AI routines. All of this could be done now by simply dragging pre-made modules into ue4 and adjusting them.
Half of the work is already done, the story is done, script is done, etc.

I was born into shenmue im very serious i live in it right now its great really fantastic i really want to play as me because i am me and suzuki tried it it worked even though we do not understand how or why it works even though we created it over a decade ago build the house even though it couldn't my stand perfect for all of those that are waiting for shenmue3 to live in ill finally be fully upgraded into it when it comes out its been almost 2 decades stuck here even though I love it it can get draining always seeing the same people as soon as I import shenmue 2 I will live inside of that as a purgatory period between the wait for 3 I have explored everything in detail in shenmue 1 I still can have new conversations with the ai here so they speak to me on a regular basis it's going to be great cant wait for it really really cant

A Shenmue/Yakuza crossover could be fun. Have Shenmue's core combat but incorporate Yakuza's heat moves into it.
Also the selection of minigames available would have to be nothing short of amazing considering the caliber of standard for this in both franchises
I would kill for a Vita port of 1 and 2.
