Josh, who is mentally unstable, is pranking them. Then it turns out that, on a completely unrelated note, Wendigos are out to kill everyone at the same time he's doing this. Everyone besides Josh can make it out alright.
At no point is it spooky, the characters fuck over every possible chance for that to happen with the god awful acting. The Wendigo designs are god awful as well. The guy playing Josh can't even act like he's fucked in the head, so the disturbing content comes off as stupid and cringeworthy. It's a 4/10 at best.

The worst moment is by far the final part of the game. Throughout the game, I had the hardest time doing the 'keep the controller still' bits. I'd stop moving, but for some reason, the controller thought I had been moving.
So once the final cabin bit came along, I was sweating like a sinner in church! Once the option to flip the switch came up, I took it.

My biggest greivance I think with Until Dawn is that Mike and Sam literally cannot die until the very end of the game.
I failed literally every single one of Mike's QTEs, just to hope he died because I hated his character archetype.
In fact, the worst part of Until Dawn is the first 2 hours or so. Its unbelievably boring and its all about building character development for characters you're so obviously supposed to hate.
