Do you think we'll ever get good LOTR games again? Most of the games barely scratch the surface of the world and there's plenty in there to make games out of that don't step on the toes of the actual events of LOTR itself (like Shadow of Mordor did).

>>
>>315334097
I don't think that's possible, at least not as a whole narrative

Never because Tolkien Estate holds rights to everything that isn't Hobbit and LotR. And Tolkien Estate (namely Tolkien's son) treats his father's work like Holy Bible and won't let anyone rape it. Based on how awful the movies and Shadow of Hurrdurr are, I'm glad he's like this.
Too bad that once he dies his retarded children will sell everything in a jiffy because they said they never read most of the books and loved the Warner Jews movies.
>>
>>315330732
>like Shadow of Mordor did
By completely raping the tiny bit of Silmarilion content it had access too solely because of throwaway mentions in LotR appendices.

They're good movies on their own but they rape the source material just as much as Hobbit does.
You were just too young at the time to care so you're more lenient towards them than to Hobbit but both are literally the exact same in terms of writing and lore rape. Hobbit just has more CGI.

I think it's more of a slap to Tolkien's legacy to leave his work to collect dust over allowing people to expand upon it. Describing any deviation as a rape of the source material is childish, it always has been.

legally, it isn't possible, even adding in the extra bits of lore in SoM was skirting the line a bit, bastardized as it was even

>>315334462
as a whole narrative from the perspective of a single character it wouldn't be possible, especially as any character that did anything of note during the book died before the end. Maybe it could be done similar to the movie adaptation games for RotK and TTT, where you can have individual missions that give you a choice of a few characters to play as, or maybe even as an RTS, which would probably have a ton of different factions to play as from mission to mission as well

>>315335698
personally I think the Hobbit was a little bit harder on the lore rape than LotR was, but in general you're right, though LotR are really good movies regardless where the Hobbit was shit as both movies and adaptations.

>>315335672
Well, any time someone other than Christopher Tolkien tries to do something original in Tolkien's universe it is ALWAYS shit. Always.
Fixed it for you.
Without Chris we'd never have History of Middle Earth, Silmarilion, Unfinished Tales or Children of Hurin.
Sure he didn't do anything in Unfinished Tales other than publish it, but History of Middle Earth and Silmarilion were written by both his father and himself, since he had to fill in all the unfinished blanks left by JRR. And Children of Hurin was entirely his OC as far as I know.

>>315336237
Replying late to you but the fucking servers keep shitting on me.
Legally it's actually fully possible as long as they stick to material present in the appendices or 100% OC.
Basically, what Warner Jews can do right now:
Use material from the Hobbit
Use material from the appendices in Hobbit
Use material from LotR
Use material from appendices in LotR (AND ONLY THE STUFF THAT'S IN APPENDICES, not the "full" versions of them that the appendices reference)
Make OC as long as it's 100% OC

As for game, Silmarilion is so rich in content you could make 3 different BFME games out of that thing alone and still have material for 3 hack and slash games with multiple characters and STILL not adapt it in full.

And finally regarding the movies, I'd say arguably the first Hobbit film is still good outside of literal stone giants, parts of the Goblin Town and Azog's presence.
The second an third are just pure garbage, the second takes the take as the worst though. The third one actually is alright if you just want CGI battles mayhem.

>somebody thought it was a good idea to interpret Sauron as a literal flaming eyeball

Did you know they originally planned to go back on this and have Sauron fight Aragorn 1 vs 1 at the Black Gate? They were going to explain the eye as a spell cast by Sauron, an extension of his will but not literally himself.
Sauron was also supposed to try and trick Aragorn by appearing as Annatar before they'd begin fighting.
>>
>>315337331
The thing is there Jackson pulled himself back and realized how bad an idea that is and that the triumph of LOTR shouldn't come down to fighting the final boss. In the Hobert movies he just went full autist video game because he didn't give a shit anymore.

>>
>>315337495
Problem is that Annatar's dialogue was reused for the Mouth of Sauron with minor changes and Aragorn still fights Sauron, it's just that they (poorly) overlayed a CGI troll on top of him in post production to remove Sauron from the scene.

I suppose using the appendices would give enough information to be able to make a game or two out of, though I haven't gone through them in awhile since I usually just go for the Silmarillion itself instead

I agree with your opinions on the Hobbit films, though I'd argue that the third movie is worse than the second, honestly I think it fails even as a cheap CGI action movie and that bayformers gets the job done better if that's all you want.

>Did you know they originally planned to go back on this and have Sauron fight Aragorn 1 vs 1 at the Black Gate?
I did, here's the video for anyone who wants to watch it, notice how, as >>315337685 points out, Jackson just CGI'ed a troll over him when the decision to cut the fight was made, I believe it was Orlando Bloom's idea to move the lens flare from Sauron himself up to the eye in the release version.

But the second movie is entirely trash from the point of spiders appearing. It doesn't even have redeemable action scenes. The entirety of lore is filled with rape in that movie. The third one is a lot less offensive in that regard.

>>
>>315339491
What the fuck my post got cut off somehow.
I listed these as most offensive:

>Spiders only being understandable when wearing the ring
>Tombs of the Nazgul
>Legolas and Tauriel
>Thranduil literally using magic
>Barrel scene
>Morgul shaft
>Entirety of Dul Guldur bullshit combined with Sauron and Gandalf 1 vs 1 (1 vs 2 if you count Extended edition where Thrain appears and dies like a bitch)
>Thorin leaving dwarves behind
>Niggers and Gooks in Lake Town
>Master and Not-Grima
>Dildo Faggins taking off the ring while talking with Smaug because he sees a vision of Sauron
>The entire last 20 minutes of the movie with melted gold plot to kill Smaug during the chase scene

I'm sorry but compared to this making Beorn edgier is very fucking tame.
>>
>>315340067

Well obviously all of that had me raging too, anon. My point was that it was shit from the very beginning and basically showed that the heart/soul of the story was gone from the film. The Hobbit movies couldn't be further than what they were originally. Bilbo is a side character in HIS story, and it's obvious from the very start.
>>
>>315340256
Dildo was definitely the main character in the first movie though, that's why I said it's serviceable. It's really a decent movie with some lore rape but overall nothing more grievous than elves at Hornburg. The overuse of CGI and bloom are my biggest problems with the first movie.
Second is just irredeemable trash with virtually nothing good about it except maybe the conversation with Smaug which is ruined too by taking the ring off and making Smaug himself into a wyvern.

>>
>>315340990
The point is not that wyverns are or aren't dragons.
The point is that Smaug had 4 appendices, tail and 2 wings in the book. Tolkien even drew him for fucks sake.
Also when most people think dragon, they think the 4 legged beast with wings, not 2 legged reptile with wingarms.
>>
>>315341128
>>315340990
Tolkien on dragons:
"A serpent creature, but with four legs and claws; his neck varied in length but had a hideous head with long jaws and teeth or snake tongue. He was usually heavily armoured especially on his head and back and flanks. Nonetheless he was pretty bendable (up and down or sideways), could even tie himself in knots on occasion, and had a long powerful tail. . . . Some had wings - the legendary kind of wings that go together with front legs (instead of being front legs gone queer). ... A respectable dragon should be 20 ft or more."

>front legs gone queer
Wyverns BTFO
>>
>>315340067
I agree that all of that was bullshit and as far as lore rape is concerned the second movie is far guiltier than the third, I just think the third film is worse as a movie, I didn't find the action to be entertaining at all, the movie basically went nowhere for a solid hour, the visuals were hot garbage, the writing was atrocious, the lore rape, while not as extreme in the second movie, was still present, so on so forth. If you really want to cringe, here's a clip form the extended edition which is coming out soon

well that's good to know at least, I haven't actually seen any of the hobbit extended editions, I've been putting them off until all of them were out so that I'd first watch them when I do the inevitable 6 film marathon and then probably never watch them again. If I may suggest something for LotR, watch Kerr's fanedits.
While still not 100% accurate to the books, it's a much better experience that's way closer to them.
And besides, it will count as something new for you.

I'm merely saying that it would actually benefit from being a "one book adapted into multi-movie franchise".
Hobbit simply doesn't work by stretching it into 3 movies.
Even making it 2 movies long is a stretch, let alone 3.
But Silmarilion is that rare case of being massively content packed book which makes it perfect for multi movies.
And Jackson has massive hardon for elves and is very biased towards them so I guess he'd feel like in heaven if he got to make a new 6 movie franchise adaptation of Silmarilion.

I suppose your right in that sense, it does loan itself to a multi film adaptation far more than a lot of other books, the hobbit especially

because its a kickass scene in both the book and the movie, so it's inspired a lot of art, some lewder than others apparently

>A cold voice answered: ‘Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye.”
>A sword rang as it was drawn. “Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may.”
>“Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!”
>Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel.
“But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.

I fucking loved War of the Ring.
That game was basically Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 5 anyway, same developer and engine.
You've got Dark Alliance 1 and 2, then Champion of Norrath which is basically Dark Alliance 3, Champions Return to Arms which is essentially Dark Alliance 4 and then War in the North which makes a 5.
War in the North is also the best of them all and even explains the age old "Why didn't they just use eagles?" question.

What is it about Tolkien's work that has inspired so many other artists to illustrate the stories he wrote. Considering the fact that he has included an entire creation myth featuring a god like being, angels, demons, and the birth of mankind, his work could be taken as a bible of sorts. Future generations may even mistake it as such.

LOTRO is still a pretty solid game to play if you want to explore middle earth.

The mmo features don't really compete anymore (lack of challenging group content is the first that comes to mind), but no other Lord of the Rings game compares in terms of atmosphere and world visuals.

I don't really play it as an mmo, but I go back every few months and always enjoy myself.

My main problem with it is how it's littered with microtransactions and how the art style is waaaaaaaaaaaay too generic medieval with a dose of fantasy.

"When he [Bilbo] peeped out in the lightning-flashes, he saw that across the valley the stone-giants were out, and were hurling rocks at one another for a game, and catching them, and tossing them down into the darkness where they smashed among the trees far below, or splinter into little bits with a bang....They could hear the giants guffawing and shouting all over the mountainsides." ~ The Hobbit Chapter IV Over Hill and Under Hill, pages 65-66. Idk what edition it is but it's old as fuck, maybe 1973. Publisher is Ballantine Books. Whether it's an allegory for the storm or not Tolkien wrote stone giants in there. >was anyone else a little off-put by the weirdly light-hearted tone amidst ripping limbs off of goblins and a fucking sextuple troll decapitation?
that's one of the larger problems with the trilogy as a whole I think, the Hobbit was a pretty lighthearted children's book, but the films try to force them to feel more serious, like LotR was, and it just comes out forced and awkward, like the movie doesn't know what it's trying to do. That scene in particular is the logical extreme of that idea, with more blood and gore in a single scene then there really should have been in the whole movie, just casually shrugged off like its all fun and games in the middle of what's supposed to be a serious battle.

>the movie doesn't know what it's trying to do
Its trying to appeal to everybody. It doesnt want to be too kiddy, or too adult, so it just alternates which is retarded. It'd have some redeeming qualities if it wasnt for that. Its just proof that all you need to make a movie is money, not talent or artistic integrity.
>>
Is Ea a cyclical event? Does the world eventually end, and Eru gathers the Ainur together to sing music once more over and over? It's a theory I've always liked even though there's no real evidence for it. I also like to think that some of the crazy ancient, sometimes dark, purely inexplicable shit are "leftovers' from a previous cycle.

Specifically, I think this is a good way to explain Ungoliant and good old Tom Bomb-a-dillo.

At the very start of the Ainulindale, it says that at first there was only Eru, and from him came the Ainur as the offspring of his thought, so unless that specified the start of the cycle, then it can't be cyclic, as it specifies that there was nothing before the Arda we all know and love. There are a multitude of interpretations regarding the fate of Ea and how it pertains to the fate of men, and how that might tie into the second Music of the Ainur. Of course, at its core, Ea was merely an exercise to show Melkor the consequences of his actions to begin with. I think there could definitely be a second phase of existence, though whether Dagor Dagorath is canon is disputed, but personally I don't think its cyclic, but if it is then this is definitely the start of the cycle.
