Inside Out is different because the extra figs actually have very helpful abilities. But because of this you can actually find "costume change" stations that let you play as any character for a limited time so you're not forced to buy an extra fig to get collectibles.
But getting the extra fig means you can play as Sadness all the time which is helpful - her extra ability makes cloud platforms not disappear so you can stand on them indefinitely.

Both Star Wars playsets allow any Star Wars character. You need to collect special coins to play as any character outside the applicable SW characters (so in the prequel trilogy one, you can play as Han Solo right away but need a coin to play as Ahsoka for example)

Marvel Battlegrounds will be different and allow all 3.0 AND 2.0 Marvel characters
Level creation is a bit more in-depth than Minecraft. You can place scenary and terrain like usual, but there's also a ton of logic items you can use to create pretty much anything. Ones that track score, ones that set off other items, ones that track currency, etc. So you can make a ton of stuff, don't think it's simple just because it's a kids game - some of the logic stuff I get confused about sometimes.

Just a ton of "creativi-toys" that let you do all the background game mechanic stuff. Think of a simplified version of normal game code/logic.
So you place a locator item, then link it to an enemy spawner, then go into the settings for the spawner and choose enemies, and make the locator trigger when a player touches it. As an example. But there's lots of depth to it.

The game comes with a set amount of themes and items right of the box. Mostly the Disney stuff that don't have playsets. Also you can buy the items from all the playsets in 1.0 and 2.0 with in-game currency.
Getting a new playset does unlock you more items for the toybox in that theme, but you can do tons with what's available from the base game. They're just extra things to help you make a Star Wars style level or something.

The Starwars expansions are pretty awesome actually, like moderately good PS2 action/license game good. Couple that with Extreme mode and the toy box and think i've found myself a really good and creative time killer.

The Wii U version of 2.0 is a mess so I can't imagine 3.0 is any better. The framerate drops into the 15's on just the simple Toy Box levels(Specifically the Brave Toy Box minigames, especially the survival mode).
For those of you with 3.0 PC, is it a buggy, freezing mess for you guys as well? Picture related happened to me during the tutorial. The Anakin cutscene would not leave and overlayed everything, and then once the Inside Out cutscene with Anger ended(Where you jump into the pipe thing) I just fell through the floor and couldn't continue. Then when I leveled as Merida and tried putting into any of her skills it froze me in the daily challenge which really pissed me off.

The figures are playable characters, each character has it's own set of abilities.
The playable missions are the playsets and they're full games (like an expansion pack campaign) with voice acting, cutscenes, etc
The main draw of the game is the Toybox mode where you build and create custom levels and share them and you can play other people's levels. It's like a cross between LBP and Minecraft I guess

All you need is the starter pack with the base, 1 playset and 2 figures and you can do most everything. That's a full playset and the entire toy box mode (the main draw). The extra playsets and figures are just if you want them. The game doesn't push them that hard at all.

2.0 stuff works on 3.0, but 3.0 stuff won't work for 2.0. 1.0 will work on both games, the only things that don't have compatibility with later versions are playsets and minigame disc things.
