Use git versions of PCSX2, you shouldn't have any problems except for occasional slowdowns. There was one problem bothered me while emulating. It might crash every once in a while transitioning to cutscenes so you might have to switch to software rendering in cutscenes, there should be a shortcut for that look it up and save often.

Drakengard 1 isn't so bad when you get past the first few hours, it's much more manageable once you have some spells to kill groups of enemies. If you want to know the actual answer, the lead Platinum guy on this project was a huge Nier fanboy. He created a pitch for a spiritual successor and worked on a design document with other Platinum people that liked the game.
Then Square-enix approached platinum, totally unrelated, and asked if they wanted to do a project for them. It was an open deal and offered to let them use one of their properties. The Nier fanboy jumped and immediately said he wanted to do a Nier sequel. Taro and his producer, art people from Nier, Keiichi Okabe and the Tactics Ogre artist were all called in. They provided their talents, while platinum makes the game itself. Complete separation of the technical and artistic side, very interesting approach that I'd totally be down to see more of.

Fear not, explorable environments is confirmed. And there will be RPG elements. They also said even though it's platinum they want the gameplay to suit the RPG and Nier style. So I think it'll be rock solid to fight and move, while also retaining the exploration of Nier. I want to say there are towns but with the way the earth is, I have no idea whether it'll be desolate and lonely, your upgrades done at some sort of station, or if there'll be some type of people to interact with.
