Wrpgs, but unfortunately nowadays only indies really make those. I prefer games like Divinity OS, Wasteland 2, Grimrock, Shadowrun, UnderRail, Age of Decadence, Pillars of Eternity, Expeditions Conquistador, etc. but AAA studios see more money on shit like Skyrim, so I have to play those titles with shit budgets that always shows somewhere. That said there is fun to be had on things like SMT or even Final Fantasy from time to time and even those action RPG games can be fun too.

What, I play both but what are you talking about? Dialogue menus and shit combat do not make up good gameplay.
I prefer open worlds. When Japanese developers do this, the worlds are empty, bland and mostly cannot be interacted with.
In WRPG's they have a tendency to populate their worlds with interesting NPC's and sites of notice, since they all hearken back to the good 'ol days of AD&D hexcrawls.
SaGa games and other open-ended JRPG's with open worlds are often sparse, empty and pointless.

The weird thing though is that while Jrpgs have their story-driven games where world exploration is a formality, they also have a bizarre fascination with the classic dungeon crawl Wizardry.
The common thread of those games of course is that their gameplay is combat focused, skill use and interacting with the world in meaningful ways are very shallow and limited. Even if there is cooking, forging, etc, etc in a game, they have a linear level progression that ultimately lends itself to the all important drive to combat.
Whereas even if a Wrpg has a linear progression with a stronger narrative focus (such as Baldur's Gate, Fallout 2, etc) they, like open-world wrpgs will also often have a deeper or more multifaceted skill system that can, but often have their own purpose and use outside of simply killing things.
I have been unironically enjoying re:birth 3.

It's funny, I routinely play and write campaigns for fantasy pen and paper rpg games. But for the most part I cannot stand reading through fantasy novels.
They are often so predictable that it isn't worth wasting my time confirming what I suspected within the first two hours of reading the book. Even "gritty" and "low fantasy" series such as ASOIAF bore me.

On the whole, JRPGs. Most classic WRPGs are very bland in their setting and story and are barely functional due to bugs and poor design decisions. There are a handful like VTMB that I enjoyed greatly though.
