To add to this, RE3 Nemesis.
Some people consider it weaker to RE2. I personally consider it my favourite RE game. The constant worry of having Nemesis jumping out on you can cause some "Ohshit" moments that RE2 doesn't really have outside of Mr. X, but even he is easily dealt with as he is ultra slow.

the other good thing about silent hill that I didn't say before is it can be finished in 5 hours, possibly led but I'd expect about 7-10 hours for first play through, so if you want a short one to get you started, it will do the trick.

Jade Cocoon. It's like Pokemon except you can mix-and-match the monsters and the game morphs them together to create a new monster based on the original two. I got it cheap at a Blockbuster (back when Blockbuster sold games (back when Blockbuster existed)) and it was p. good. Cool story, too, very Shinto-ish.

if you want to go deeper than just emulating games, go to www (.) oldgamemags (.) com and go to the ps1 area, and download some of the magazines from the time. what was written back in the day is generally much different than what is said in retrospect, and they can be really interesting. (an old n64 gamer magazine gave superman 64 a positive preview, saying with a little polish it could be a great game, and praised the flying)
