Joe wants to make a game of his own, so Joe(Dev) creates a kickstarter.
That's a good 100 or so backers right there.
Jake becomes a writer on some hot new hipster indie shit, and they advertise it with "Written by Jake the writer of the famous Mother 4!" (fangame)
There's even more fame from ripping off a series.

This isn't a copy, though. This isn't taking Earthbound and porting it to iOS in China. This is more akin to Star Wars EU. A lot of authors became famous for their work in the EU despite it all being based on Lucas' films. Hell, even fan cinematographers have become famous for their lightsaber scenes. Name and setting aside, this looks like an original work. All the sprites, tilesets, music, etc, is original.

Here's the thing though, they tend to keep to themselves. I also used to write EB fanfic and dedicated years to Starmen.net, and while i'm over that and kind of embarassed about it myself, I still dig that people are just SO into something that they create all of this shit. toys, clothes, music, a goddamn convention, and they for the most part any time I see anything relating to them, seem super positive about it. None of the retard-level arguments that rip apart other communities. I dunno. I think I just respect people that output creative stuff, regardless of what its for.
