Look up how to make a Japanese PSN account, then download the Japanese demo. It'll give you a good idea whether or not you can handle the JP text. Personally, I don't care about the story that much, but I couldn't figure out how some of the changes to the battle system worked without English text.

JRPG fans have to take whatever they can get these days. That said, I like the games because they play well enough, and everything moves at a snappy pace that makes you want to keep chugging along. Once I'm done with one, I don't think about it anymore. It's a popcorn experience.
