I think it was more that he was very insecure about his hobbies not being "masculine" and wasn't sure if that meant he was gay or not. He might have been bisexual or something, but I think the main aspect of his shadow was his insecurity about not feeling like a man which is why he would try to act so tough all the time. His actual sexuality wasn't really the main focus, although he did have a crush on Naoto.
