As a pure idea, 2's system wasn't bad at all. Acquiring stat and spell upgrades gradually based on playstyle? Sounds cool. The problem is that the execution was pure shit, and the Saga series that was born from it takes pride in being as obtuse as possible when it comes to mechanics which is why they don't resonate too well with people.

FF2's system is bad because of obscure mechanics. Like how each piece of armour has weight, and using heavy armour stops you from dodging anything. Does that sound obvious? Yes. Does it look obvious in-game? No.
The Job system is a kind of inversion of that, where instead of letting you fuck yourself over with good intentions, it lays down specific paths and restrictions so your characters progress in an expected way.
