Do you guys think its time for a new variant of CDs to be developed? With all these games coming out with day one patches, Im pretty sure the problem is the lack of space in CDs. Im sure even blue ray falls short of space now.

....digital?

This. OR probably move on from CDs to something else like USBs.

The problem is most games are now over 40gb. Itd probably be more expensive to buy a USB with that much space. Also I doubt anyone could be satisfied with digital downloads if their connection isnt super fast.

We haven't used CDs in years

No. It's short development cycles and the greed of publishers trying to meet a deadline.

name one game that uses more than 127 gb

Day one patches are the result of the publisher pushing the game out to stores and putting it on discs before finishing bug testing. Instead of sitting around twiddling their thumbs for a month waiting for the game to release, they bug test AFTER they ship out the games and just make a patch that can be uploaded on release day.

Cartidges.

There micro SD cards with 128GB.

Unfortunately in order to match the price of optical media you have to stay with sizes smaller than what can be done with blu-ray. Writing data to an 8GB flash card in bulk still costs more than stamping a dual layer DVD.

Digital is the way of the future. Microsoft probably planned to release a Xbone Slim edition with no disk-drive this generation but the initial backlash at E3 2013 meant they had to ditch the idea.

Nintendo might return to cartridges with the NX, but disk-based media will stay until everyone has fast enough internet speeds to go digital only.

>A USB.
More obsolete than a CD and way more unreliable than one.

A NAND based flash storage would work just fine.
And no im not talking about a SSD, but a physical cartdrige with NAND, a NOR one would be too expensive for a single game.

>128GiB USB
Even less reliable than a chink USB, game data would get corrupted in weeks or less.

I think Valve's Steam Machines point the way forward. They are digital only, but if developers do things the way Valve wants them to the games will be playable on any platform where you can use Steam. If they try to go SteamOS only, they'll still be playable on any Linux based platform.

Does SteamOS only supports OpenGL? no news about vulkan?
>>

Vulkan is intended to be SteamOS's killer feature. Its still under NDA, but has been stated to be released 'before the end of the year' and the rumor is it will launch on the same day as the Steam Machines.

Depending on your hardware and drivers you can also get native DX support, but only for DX9 and it requires AMD hardware with an unofficial driver.
