Considering how much the JRPG genre contributed to SONY's success, and how little Nintendo did to cultivate the genre during the NES and SNES era (and especially Nintendo's own CEO having negative opinions on RPGs at the time), was the N64's lack of JRPGs truly to blame on cartridges?

Let's remove the cartridge from the equation, because the SNES proved you can make great JRPGs with cartridges. Is it more likely that companies just didn't want to put up with Nintendo's bullshit because they knew what the company was like when it came to RPGs?

Imagine creating a JRPG for the N64 and getting absolutely NO coverage from Nintendo. That would be absolutely dire.

But Nintendo wouldn't pay for the cost necessary to manufacture the carts on either the NES or SNES to bring them to the west and sell more copies.

Remember Fire Emblem? Oh wait you don't cause Nintendo never brought the series over on the NES and SNES.

JRPGs were not a major component of the PlayStation's success outside of Final Fantasy VII.

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and other "mature" games, as well as kid-friendly franchises like Spyro were what made it a success.

JRPGs on PlayStation were as niche as they were on SNES.

Oh let's not forget fighting games like Tekken and racing games like Gran Turismo!

So basically ANY fucking game genre ever was what made the PS1 successful you retard?

JRPGs were big in the PS1 era. Quit trying to rewrite history you nintencuck.

So you are an FFVII baby I take it?
>>
>>313017402
You are joking right?

Ps1 had a plethora more than snes had and also the best snes RPGs were ported to ps1 too
>>
>>313018652
But it's true, they did fuck all

None of the NES or SNES RPGs were released in Europe or Australia either, they were NA and JP only, not to mention they were still niche when on Nintendo too, even Sakaguchi himself says he's surprised when he hears people like FF6 best and he says "then why didn't they buy it!" in response to that

It wasn't until FF7 and the PS1 that JRPGs were being sold to an actual worldwide audience

Ehm... maybe

Hmmm, nah.

*tips meems*

No, no single genre was responsible. The rise of more cinematic and violent games was.

You're the one rewriting history if you think JRPGs were anywhere near "big". Maybe they had a larger market share than today relatively, but they were still a niche genre.

Literally JRPGs, fam.

People seem to forget that Sony was also a much larger, much stronger, and much richer company than Nintendo. Even if the N64 was comparable to the PS1 in terms of hardware, and even if Nintendo's policies were lax, Sony had the willpower and money to ensure they stayed on top. Nintendo's hardware was easy to work with and used CDs? Cute, Sony would give developers free SDKs and produce their games absolutely for free. You grossly underestimate how strong Sony is, everyone keeps making them out to be the underdog when they were already the giant.
