Duke Nukem 3D is great.

This is a shame, since you basically need a CRT TV to really appreciate the game. The backgrounds are 240p, and nearest neighbor really turns them into jaggy messes. It's a total shame since Square could easily have kept the high resolution backgrounds on file and made the game truly HD.

No regrets though, these are awesome games. Play Douk Nouk 3D, X-COM, and Monkey Island to get a good feeling about varying difficulty levels and gameplay.

Start with Doom.
Doom II, etc are just expansions and I feel are optional. And I like them a lot less than the original Doom.
Duke builds upon Doom a lot. So play that right afterwards.

If you play Doom, check out the Brutal Doom mod that changes a bunch of shit, gives you an assault rifle, makes the game more bloody and violent.
Also check out Zdoom which improves controls and mouse aiming.

Emulators are a major part of PC gaming. Console games are just as good as PC games, PC can play most console games and can mod them. I recently downloaded a translation patch for an emulated console game and played it on my PC.

You jsut can't run magic to make the 240p backgrounds look sharp.
Most of these mods are about replacing the 3D models, which often feel really out of place and clash with the game. Usually by taking later FF7 designs, and inserting them into FF7.
There is fans who tried to make new HD versions of the 2D backgrounds but progress is really slow.
