Hopefully pirates start charging people for cracks. Why spend 60$ when you can spend 5$ and get the same game? PC MASTER RACE.

I'll say this first. FUCK STEAM.

That greedy shylock Gaben is monetizing every single aspect of PC gaming and slowly turning it into a monopoly. And nobody is saying anything because Gaben is supposedly the GOD of PC gaming and "muh master race" elitism.
>>
>>291872981
Actually, when you think about it if this shit works it could be potentially glorious.
People start selling mods.

Publishers say hey that's cool, let's make mod tools for our game and keep 5-10% of every mod sold because we own the "platform" and all games get mod tools.

Games get better and have way more longevity.
Pirates get all this shit for free obviously.

Calling it now.

It's sad because I was thinking of reinstalling Skyrim and just using the Workshop instead of Nexus (besides ENB), just because I'm a lazy fuck and like that the mods will update themselves and such. I mean, I guess I still could. in the end, all I really cared about was an ENB and SkyUI. The latter of which is on the workshop. I don't know. Maybe I'll still try it. If anything, this just reminded me that a Workshop for the game even exists.

>And so, if you're wondering where the Nexus sits in between all of this, then you'll find us sitting where we've always been sitting, right here, without fundamentally changing. We're still going to be about the free and open distribution of mods for everyone and I don't see that changing any time soon. Sure, I've had offers. Lots of offers. And I don't discount anything at all, but right now, for the foreseeable future, there are no plans to shake things up at all. I have absolutely no idea how these changes within the modding community are going to affect the community here at the Nexus, but I think that there's still going to be a market for a site that continues to offer a free and open sharing platform, away from money, where people who want to continue modding as a hobby, not a career, can shine.

Based Nexus

Considering the current state of the Steam Market on the subject of Early Access, I'm willing to bet that this is the beginning of the end for Steam.

Quality control and sensibility went flying out the window and now we replace it with paying for crap that hasn't even proven itself to be worth anything.

A donation button would have done the exact same thing that this does except it wouldn't have disgusted the entire community.

The TES modding community is such a hive of shared resources, community projects, and decent attitudes that this paid Steam Workshop is going to flatline when it comes to Skyrim. >The worry is with the introduction of Curated Workshops that free and open modding will be removed entirely, as in, it just won't be possible to do. You've seen the arguments before with developers like BioWare and DICE no longer supporting modding with their games, they say it's because it's too complicated for modders or because they don't have time to work on the tools, many users argue it's because they don't want mods to cut in to DLC sales. I don't know any more about it than you in that regard, but if you're running a curated modding marketplace and there's a site out there with lots of mods available for free (note: probably not the same mods, as that wouldn't make sense!) will you willingly let that continue or would you try to ensure all your mods were going through your curated marketplace? I guess it would entirely depend on the developer and publisher in question, but if you ask me, my main concern now is the DRMification and closing down of free and open modding, the concept that modding can only take place if it's done through one official platform to the detriment of all others. Because up until now that's definitely not what modding has been about at all.

>Mod authors wont be inclined to work with each other.
>Collaboration mods are dead.
>Money is a finite thing, modders will only want to make the 'next big thing' instead of small additions.

I honestly can see the value in valve allowing modders to sell their mods and give a donate button, but what the fuck is this 25% revenue cut for the modder?

Jesus valve these are not dota 2 items where you guarantee at least some profit.

Also unlike everyone else here, modding does need more intensives then it has right now. The scene is very much dying for the vast majority of games, and will continue to dwindle since it is just not worth it for content creators to mod a game for free when they could just make their own for better money/experience/resume padding.

>>291880935
Get into your head that you're not technically "paying" for anything, but, are forced to "donate" towards them to use their mods. And the "hard work" part is bullshit, there's no quality control, they don't have to have any qualifications, no obligations to their donors, nothing at all. Many of these modders are (and ten times more WILL be) nothing but scammers who slap together some stolen assets, write up a paragraph or two of false promise, and then slap a price tag on it.

I mean even if for a second I act like it isn't absolutely loathsome on a moral level to turn modding from a community service for fans by fans into a business model, especially when most of these mods are the prime reason people buy the game in the first place and steam / the developers of the game taking *any* kind of cut is absolutely ridiculous - it still wouldn't work as intended, but just be a breeding ground for apsiring scammers trying to trick people into parting with their money by making false promises they don't have any reason to keep.

>you always go a step further about some stupid shit like how pirating is a solution to the problem or something.

I don't see how it isn't. If everyone ignored the audacity that is paid community mods, and the devs and steam taking a cut out of their sales as if they had any right to - then the model fails. It's not like *pirating* is the part that helps, but not buying mods does. And it's not like not buying mods is doing any harm to the mod culture or anything, it's worked for decades, why should it stop doing so once steam acts like asking money for them is justifiable. In order for this shit to become accepted, people have to accept it, and shell out for this shit. If you don't, it won't persist. Am I missing something?

Paying money for mods is what I feel is way more uncomfortable.

What are people even worried about?

I'm a modder and I wont be charging. The good thing about throwing something out there for free is that if people complain you can just tell them to fuck off. You don't owe them anything.
People already complain enough when it's free, fuck knows how much worse if would be if they felt entitled because they'd actually paid money

I think lots of people aren't going to bother with having their inboxes flooded by people with issues over like £40, once you take the tiny overall cut into account

Attracting professionals so mods will be higher quality, which also means free mods will be higher quality and some stuff will be good enough to ask money for.

>How it will actually happen
Complete retards who don't give the slightest fuck and never heard of the term "reasonable purchase" their entire life will just pay hundreds, thousands of bucks for shit, ruining the entire economy, causing every single mod maker to monetize the shit out of their garbage mods, all because of a few select 14 year asshats that are allowed to spend thousands of parents money on steam for virtual items.

I mean look at dota 2 hats, there's items in there that people pay HUNDREDS OF BUCKS FOR

For items that do NOTHING. Now imagine if they allow custom game modes and other mods to be monetized. It'll be fucking shit within a week.

This won't work. The modding scene is a symbiosis wherein people forgive mod developers of things they wouldn't if they had to pay for it.
>>
Paid Mods already exist - Stop crying

Paying for mods is not a new thing. If you play games such as Euro Truck Simulator you know that many mods ask for donation. It has been like that for years and years. Paying for mods not only encourages modders to put more effort on their creations, it also encourages more people to become modders. I would gladly pay money for the hours of fun of mods created by Chesko. Also, DLC sized mods, such as Falskaar, Wyrmstoot, Helgen Reborn, The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal are just the type of content you would all gladly pay your money if Bethesda did it. But just because a modder did the same content, sometimes even better content, you guys instantly ignore the ammount of work the modder put on his creation because it doesn't carry the "Official Content" seal. Also, can someone explain me why is it so wrong to pay a couple of bucks for a nice sword in Skyrim with actual impact on gameplay but it is ok to spend hundreds of dollars on knives and Ak-47's skins on CS:GO? Don't be hypocrite.

Paying for mods, is a future I'm glad to be part of.

I've always said over the past few years, that I was starting to dislike steams terms etc, not "owning" your games etc etc

Steam/Valve has coaxed people into spending tons of money on their library, made them "dependant" they have all your games, gaming social circle, achievements etc etc.

People have become dependent on the likes of Steam, one thing about pirating games is, you're never sucked into that dependency, no time-invested achievements or willywaving profile to drag you back.

Enjoy, it'll be hard to let go Steamfags.
Valve is a company, it's primary goal isn't your enjoyment, it's making money.

I saw it with GTA V, "no no don't get that one, get the Steam one because.."

tl;dr dependency.

>boycott

To me even the term "boycott" sounds ridiculous in this situation - as if I was even *considering* paying for mods for a split second before consciously sucking it up and deciding it's a bad idea.

I'm not "boycotting" it, I'm fucking DISGUSTED and personally offended that they feel they can "offer" me this to begin with. Fuck no they're not getting a cent. Pf. "Boycott". Fuck Steam, fuck every modder who puts his mod on the workshop asking for money, and FUCK everyone who falls for this shit and gives them even only a cent, because you shitheads are part of the problem.

Because of gamergate/he does it for free.
Janitors and moderators initial reaction to a big bang of news is to remove threads.

Reminder that clothing and shit on Second Life cost literal pennies 90% of the time, despite the fact that all content is user made there

Reminder that modders are more jewish than content creators on fucking SL

THE FUTURE OF GAMING:
>Developers no longer make games
>Developers make "modding platforms"
>basically just engines for modders to make money off of
>"Games are way to complex to finish these days"
>Developers just rely on modders to finish all their games
