the last good one i played was dreadout. very rough around the edges but it had some damn scary parts. plays similarly to fatal frame and is pc only right now.

I remember seeing screenshots of a horror game a while back where someone was being chased down a dark hallway by a huge face with white eyes and black hair. Do you guys know what that is? I dunno, maybe I'm making it up or something. I seem to recall it not being a Japanese-made title for some reason.
I've given thoughts about starting up a horror general on /vg/, but I don't think there's a strong enough community

Stupid pussyface enemies. One reason I didn't like the game were the enemy designs. The unique monster they added to the 360/PS3/PC versions was cool. I liked the rock monster boss but the ooze monsters? if they resembled blobs rather than people or could make appendages and walked weirder... sure. But they're not and that lack of variation was boring.

Yeah that's what thought, but I was hoping that there would be at least a little shimmer of hope. I will be honest, I played SCP CB and I thought that was horrifying. I don't know if I'm weak shit for that or not, but that was a pretty decent horror in my opinion. Cliche doesn't necessarily mean jumpscare, because jumpscares are viable in my opinion if done correctly. Cliche is more like "Zombies in a hospital" or "Little girl singing/popping up places ooo how edgy".
Something I liked was PT because in my opinion was actually a nice breath of fresh air from the usual horror and was very smart in its delivery. It was a little more original than most games I've seen recently and made me a little hype for the new Silent Hills.

I agree with you, but again. Less humaniod may have been better. You look at them and go "so they were once human, huh? alright then" rather than "THAT USED TO BE A HUMAN!?"
It's an important factor to me. Zombies were decent enemies in the older REs because they were just in the way. They shuffled and were creepy but they weren't these later RE zombies. Hard to explain but they weren't exactly the main enemy, just the first you encountered.

How familiar are you with Forbidden Siren? I think it's great for anyone who's a fan of Silent Hill and the stealth in MGS
recently played dead space 2 for the first time. it didnt really scare me except for a few parts, but i really enjoyed the atmosphere. walking through residential areas and hearing things in the rooms, all the audio and text logs, the whole unitology concept. definitely gonna be replaying in the hardest difficulty.

Yeah The Ring actually did the creepy little girl correctly in my opinion, because they presented it and it seemed cliche, but then it turned a 180 and executed it very nicely.there's a prequel coming out for it too, which I'm actually interested in seeing how it turns out
As for Forbidden Siren, I am not too familiar. It's funny I mentioned Silent Hills too, because I'm actually kind of excited about the new Silent Hill.
It's like the world is turning upside down. New battlefront looks like absolute shit and the new silent hill looks really promising.

I think there were 3 games with the 3rd being on Ps3, but I recall it being really easy and actiony so I never touched it
It was really popular in Japan at one point, and I think they made a movie. iirc, it's a cult classic

The story is beyond saving.
Guncrating is cool, and the enemies are neat, but it feels like a watered down TPS when you get down to it.

Thanks for the rec! Thank god it's PS2 also because that's the only playstation I own, unfortunately. Atmosphere is nice because it makes the difference between a jumpscare from nowhere and a jumpscare that actually works.

Did anyone find Cry of Fear more frustrating than scary to play?
That part where you first encounter the super fast dudes, I was so low on ammo that I kept dying.
Maybe it's just a case of "git gud", but the monsters are so bulletproof I've resolved to melee'ing them to death to save ammo.
playing through Fatal Frame 3 at the moment
I was kind of excited to start it because I thought it was going to be some kind of Silent Hill 4 clone; the whole idea of a "safehouse that gradually becomes less safe" gets me rock hard. But it's just not as good as the first two games so far. The part where you play as a guy who has to hide from ghosts made me want to barf, worst stealth mechanics ever

Atleast the monsters of Cry of Fear die more easily than the ones from Afraid of Monsters.
The ones in AoM are seemingly made of titanium, are bulletproof, got nothing to lose, they just want you to fire away and they know it.
