is it worth it to play stalker: shadows of chernobyl?
i've never played a stalker game but i've heard good nostalgic things about it.
will it still be good now that its aged for so long?

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area is quite boring.

Stalker games are super atmospheric and ultimately satisfying survival-shooters, and SoC still considered the overall best of them all.
Maybe a bit rough around the edges, but I find them to do the open-world and survival things far better than the modern, ultimately consolized games of the same kind.
But seriously, you consider 2007 games "aged" now? Fucking Crysis came out back then, and the STALKER trilogy easily has one of the best lighting engines and AI systems (A-Life), ever.
Vanilla is shit, just get an overhaul mod like Misery + Les Miserables

I wouldn't call STALKER games the messiah games you mentioned, but they are very unique experiences, that also do not follow the well known, disliked "modern" design choices. Same thing with the MISERY mod(s); they got their target audience, and are not perfect, but do offer a fresh experience.

STALKER is certainly the best at what it does. An atmospheric semi-realistic shooter with RPG-like elements and a crazy open world.

But it's not a game for everyone. It's challenging, atmospheric and very lonely. If you play it, DO NOT treat it like a run and gun FPS. Stalker is a genre all its own
