I'm in the mood for some lovecraftian horror influenced games like these, anyone got some games with a really oppressive atmosphere?
>>
bump :3
>>
Penumbra was more Lovecraftian than Amnesia was. Have you tried it?
>>
>>289402387
I played the first one and heard the others were really shit, but I guess I could give em a try
>>
>Bloodborne

Seriously? I guess I have to get a PS4 sooner than I thought.
>>
>>289401359
Scratches.
Made by euro devs, a pain in the ass to buy I think, and I think there is only one torrent out there on some russian forum, might be seedless now though.
Game's great and very lovecraftian, I think it even has some direct references to it.

Sunless Sea has a similar thing going on, but it's still basically a beta (not enough content yet)
>>
>>289402771
Yeah, the atmosphere and story is really great
>>
>>289402771
Bloodborne isn't lovecraftian as much as the other two. Sure, it has a dark post industrial style, but beyond the visual mood, it's way too action based and violent to be a proper lovecraftian representation.
>>
>>289402640
I enjoyed Penumbra more than Amnesia.
>>
>>289401359

what's lovecraftian about bloodborne?
>>
>>289401359
Sunless Sea for Lovecraftian
They Bleed Pixels for more Lovecraft.
Victoria 2 for Grand Strat Lovecraft.
Dominions 4 for when you graduate from baby-tier Lovecraft and go full Elderlitch.
>formless ones on the battlefield trampling over troops of Ulm
>>
>>289403149
Starts as Shadow Over Innsmouth, then goes into Rats in the Walls and the endgame is The Dunwich Horror + Colour out of Space.

It's really good if you're into Lovecraft.
>>
>>289403149
I'd say all the cosmic themes, maddening stuff and humans seeking out old evil shit to become smarter and succumbing to madness instead, great ones and such

also imagined yharnam to be a lot like the village in The Outsider and other stories like that, also a lot of the bosses are clearly lovecraftian inspired

Might be a bit too actiony to be horror but the themes and atmosphere are still there

The plot for the first third of the game is Shadow Over Innsmouth, then you get Dunwich Horror, Haunter in the Dark, Whisper in the Dark, Rats in the Walls and several other stories getting put in there. For fuck's sake Miskatonic University is a small level.

>>
>>289405647

He said it's too focused on action to be a PROPER Lovecraft representation, meaning that while it is Lovecraftian is still a bit too video-gamey, there is nothing wrong with that, it merely shows the game wants to cater to a wider audience, and it seems they succeeded considering your level of comprehension.

Bloodborne is better described as Victorian horror.
>>

You mean the prison guards? Those were more based on D&D mindflayers than anything.

...Which are based on Cthulhu, so a secondary influence, I guess.

Tower of Latria definitely has that Lovecraftian vibe, though. Alien, oppressive, hopeless atmosphere and all that.

It has been awhile since I've read it, but the one who awoke Cthulhu merely ran away (by boat) and didn't kill him. Maybe I just don't remember correctly.

"There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine, and as the steam mounted higher and higher the brave Norwegian drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squidhead
with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but Johansen drove on relentlessly. There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler could not put on paper. For an instant the ship was befouled by an acrid and blinding green
cloud, and then there was only a venomous seething astern"

drawing similarities to lovecraft doesn't neccesarily man they are done well, or even in a way that can be considered interesting.

Bloodborne's visual design is pretty great for these bosses, but the game relies on a lot of horror cliches like tentacles and spiders, rather than actual weirdness, although it's still a semi-respectable effort.

I think that even in a game considered worse, demon of song still represents something more odd.

Randolph Carter completed his dream-quest by overcoming several traps set by an otherworldly foe named Nyarlathotep and no harm befell upon him.

In fact, it could be argued that the only negative effects many of the main characters occur during Lovecraft's Dream Cycle are humanly ones, like homesickness, jealousy, or curiosity. Although there is also a great deal of madness and destruction in other stories in the Cycle, of course.

Have you tried Justine? If you haven't, I highly recommend you play it right now. In some ways it's better than Amnesia, only incredibly short. I tried the first Penumbra, but I was seriously frustrated by the controls. The recommendations here kind of make me want to try it again.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, though I don't think it's creepy enough. Also, Among the Sleep. Not exactly Lovecraftian, but it's definitely...unique. Try it for sure.

Also, Alan Wake if you don't mind shootan. Serena (free on Steam) is an interesting puzzle solver deal. You might like it. Lone Survivor, 2D pixel surviving. It has far more in common with Silent Hill, but the atmosphere is definitely oppressive. Sanitarium, old school adventure game, has some seriously bizarre atmosphere, but wouldn't really call it Lovecraftian.

My favorite LC's short story is The Thing on the Doorstep.

you can emulate the fan-translated PS2 game from theisozone or play the PS1 game first on the emulator if you really wanna buy either. Although I don't see why you'd buy them.

Technically ST games are very similar to King's Field but with guns and more survival horror elements and with more weird alien encounters and caves etc, etc.

You should also add that the game is just a giant mess of lua triggers and flags. Easy to modify though so you should modify your save and just enjoy the story because its worth it (steal a lot from lovecraft and pratchett work) otherwise its grind and muh rougelike.

Also there's enough content for at least 8 hours of gameplay and that's without grind so don't worry about it. Just don't buy it

Lynch originally was working a variation of Jodorowsky's script. The movie was supposed to be much longer. Then the studios wanted it to be dumbed down, cut a bunch of scenes, and added a few without Lynch's input. He had his name struck from the credits because he hated how it turned out.

Deadly Premonitions felt lovecraft like, from what i could stand of it.

Didn't Dino de Laurentiis mess with a lot of it?

Buy the Necromonicon and just start reading the stories that has the most interesting titles, that's what I did

Funny thing is most of what Lovecraft himself actually wrote didnt involve bad endings with everyone dying or going mad. It was mostly later writers who interpreted his works and added to them that added that little niche

Would Lovecraft waifu Nyaruko?

I still think it would not have been a great movie regardless.

Jorodowsky did not have a clue what Dune was about either. And I don't think having more footage would have made Lynch's better.

Heart plugs, cat milking, bald bene gesserit, stupid gross baron, an adult playing a kid in the first half of the movie, rain of Arrakis.

I am not saying a Dune movie should be strictly like the book, that would be impossible. Lynch stuck too much to it in some aspect and shouldn't have strayed in others

Just pick up any of the collections of his stories and get reading, none of them are particularly long so it doesn't matter too much where you start.

>I think if he'd live today, he'd totally post on /pol/, based as he was.

His views were largely consistent for the time period, but he'd definitely lurk 4chan if he were around today.

I've read a lot of his stories. Not all of them end with the narrator/protagonist in a bad situation, but a lot of them do. The one I mentioned is a pretty rare example where everything actually works out, if you don't take some ancient being coming back to life. But it didn't really appear malevolent, so whatever?

The Secret World is an excellent setting and story wasted on a mediocre MMO.

At least it doesn't have a monthly fee.

All Souls games have "lovecraftian" influences, Bloodborne just leans more heavily on that.
A friend of mine suggests that Bloodborne is DeS after the good ending, The Old One is put to slumber, the Soul Arts disappear and other entities seek to fill its vacuum.

While there's no arguing that the engine and some of the mechanics have aged like milk, I really do think that if the first day wasn't such a fucking grind of fetching and exposition a lot more people would play/finish Pathologic.

Gotcha. The first ST just came out on PSN for like 5 bucks, but just wanted some insight into it. I'll emulate the first and then I'll buy if I like the first hour or so.
Thanks, brah.

I normally fucking despise haremshit, but Nyaruko somehow manages to be enjoyable to a degree. Is there going to be another season?

Why was Cthulu the thing that become popular for Lovecraft? What about Cthulu has this mass appeal? I like the idea of a colour that we can't comprehend more than anything.
