But Fallout 3 really wasn't good. The world was grey and empty, the gameplay was awful and clunky, the quests were nearly all bland and the dialogue was horribly written. Absolutely nothing about the game was good and nearly everything bad about New Vegas was because it used the same engine/gameplay as Fallout 3.

I mean the engine and the "flow" of combat, for lack of a better term. It's still mostly about tanking damage and spamming heals while out DPS-ing everything else. The movement and aiming are still clunky too.
However, they did improve everything the engine would let them, so I give them credit for that. And they tried their best to make the combat as involved as they could with what they had with the DT system and ammo types and such.

Which they buy with caps, that are backed by the value of the stuff which they are buying, which is bought with caps? There needs to be something backing the currency, as to say "Caps can buy this much of X." In Fallout it was water, which had obvious value, but in FO3 it's nothing. It needs to be medical supplies, or drugs, or cigarettes, or books, or something. You can say the merchants are the ones propping it up, but that's pretty much speculation at this point. It was a stupid oversight on Bethesda's part, simply because they thought it was a 'clever' callback to the first game.

Indeed, which is why it's so disappointing that Bethesda rehashed Super Mutants, BoS, the GECK and Enclave instead of coming up for original characters, groups, and incidents for the new area. Tranquility Lane was an interesting concept, so were Point Lookout and the Pitt. Why was everything else so unoriginal?

Even if it's wrong the DEFENDERS OF THE WASTELAND don't even fucking question why some asshole who's enslaved people all across the wasteland and murdered every resident in the biggest settlement is helping them.
If anything I wish there was some sort of lockout for quests. It isn't even a good or evil thing. It's more of a "Do these fuckers know he's insane?"
Even worse than all of this is that I just realized I haven't played an open world RPG without some sort of allignment that treated me like an asshole for something I did across the map unless it was some sort of ULTRA SERIOUS BAD THING or something I did excessively.

I don't understand why people can't just like both in different ways. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are both good and not really directly comparable in my mind.
I disliked New Vegas's massive emphasis on factions. I just want to wander alone, people and all their group safety and strength in numbers shit can just fuck off and leave me alone. It only bothers me because it reflects reality pretty decently, I just want a surreal post apocalypse game where I'm not left to meddle in and weave through rising uneasy social politics. And while the ripple effect of anything I did was interesting, the main quest line felt more like a side quest to me. I wanted to find out why I go shot in the head then left for dead, but didn't really desire to become a part of anything.
If I ever make a survival game, there'll be settlements, to a very limited extent vehicles, but I'll introduce something that cripples any large hierarchical constructions from forming. It's just not fun for me.
