Earthbound is the least enjoyable game in the series, and has the least great music. Mother is easily the best. Lloyd is cooler and more likable than Jeff. Teddy is better than Poo in every way. Kumatora may be best girl, but Pippi is pretty great. Ninten is more of a character than Ness ever was. THe dance scene with Ninten and Anna, Teddy's death, and Lloyd saving the day were some of the most profoundly emotion filled scenes on the NES and in the series.

I'm the Anon you replied to. Hoh man yes it did. I cried a little when I got to Magicant. Also I love that picture you posted. I think the choice to use a red-pink for the background of the image was an amazing one, because it reminds me of Magicant and also really has that mystical sorta magical feel to it. Mother 1 was a whole lot more "normal" feeling than Earthbound, but it had lots of surreal things in it and had a little bit of it's own sort of quirkiness. I still feel like the main part of the atmosphere was it's sorta "mystical" feeling, as I said before.

Time is not a straight line. Again, Giygas as he was AFTER Mother 1 went back to the past after his defeat. He never became an egg, his psychic power just destroyed his body. The invasion of Giygas might still happen in that timeline he escaped to, since the Giygas(2) of the time Giygas(1) went back to wasn't born yet - neither was Ninten, Ness, Paula, Pokey, or anybody. If he was there for enough trillions of years, he could have joined forces or subjugated the Giygas(2) of that time. The invasion Ninten and Ness deal with was all done by the same Giygas(1) who went back in time. When Ness and co. leave the timeline Giygas(1) escaped to, they return to the timeline where Giygas(1) had already invaded twice. Those events don't un-happen, it's just as if Giygas went into another room for a while and then died.

Personally I prefer EarthBound the most because it feels like the perfect balance of what Mother 1 was missing and its own feeling. Hated Mother 3, and I haven't got back to playing Mother 1 when my save file corrupted right as I was entering Mt. Itoi
Is it strange that I think I like Mother 1 the most out of the series?
I guess the other 2 are objectively better but Mother 1 has this NES charm that can't really be emulated. I also like the enemy designs better in that game, and even the main party members are better than both Mother 2 and 3's in my opinion.
I also think that the backstory of Giygas, Maria, and George was interesting and it's a shame they just kind of abandoned the concept in Mother 2. It'd be pretty cool if they tied it in to do something with the pyramids in Earthbound or whatever. It almost feels like Mother 1 never happened in Earthbound and M3.

I also want to note that I think that if not for the NES's limitations, the emotional scenes could have had a greater impact, and the characters could have been much more fleshed out. To be honest, the scene with Ninten and Ana dancing felt really hamfisted, but there wasn't much they could do with the NES i'd imagine.
The dilemma here is that the NES and it's limitations, at least to me, is what gives Mother 1 its charm. I wish there was some way to expand upon Mother 1's storytelling potential whilst keeping the charm of the NES.

I first emulated EB when I was 15, and I went into the Cave of the Past loaded with the most impressive stuff I knew of. All seven Dragon Powders, Multi-Bottle Rockets, Brain Foods, Magic Truffles... I steadfastly refused to use them on any of the enemies or even Pokey, because I knew exactly whom I meant them for.
It would have been a magnificent opening salvo to witness, as four robots burst into dragon form and lit up the darkness, then brought their greatest talents to bear.
With moans and desperate calls, the dark accepted it all, and did not waver.
Eventually, supplies ran out, strength began to flag, and dark was impassively shapeless as ever. By now, the cries were known for what they really were: not for injury, but of endless despair and misery that the heroes were beginning to share in. One robot remembered other desperate times and began to pray. Anything for the strength to last long enough for a blow that could end the nightmare.
The dark began to roil, knocked out of its mood where heroism had failed. One of her friends fell and she prayed again, that she would not drive the dark to greater violence.
