When I think about it, this game actually kind of does suck. For an RPG, it has no replay value to speak of

Would have been nice to have, but this is give or take:

At the end of the day, it's still a VIDEO GAME and not an interactive experience. You don't cut Gone Home any slack(the hipsters that love Earthbound LOVE Gone Home as well), neither should you with Earthbound

So I started playing the fan translated GBA port of Mother

I don't think an RPG is the sort of genre that is common for having replayability. If it does it's usually things like character progression paths and finding secret shit you didn't know about or getting your dudes OP as early as you can. I've played Earthbound once every couple of years since it came out.

It's an okay Dragon Quest clone salvaged by its endearing writing and world. I'd never call it the best RPG ever made but it has its niche.
It does have some neat mechanics here and there that I wish more RPGs utilized though. Rolling health gives the battles some nice tension and lets the game throw absurdly strong enemies at you without the player feeling unprepared, the rhythm system in Mother 3 has a lot of room to develop and the auto-kills on the overworld should be a standard in every RPG that features field enemies.

Mother 1 could actually be the best game if you gave it all the advancements and polish of the two sequels. Its main problems all stem from being an NES era RPG.
As far as the game design itself is concerned its probably the most balanced of the trilogy, since it has both the open suburban world of Earthbound and the strong story elements of Mother 3 in the same package.

Currently on my first play through of 3. People talking up its greatness on v has been nice to motivate me to play more. Earthbound is an all time favorite, but Mother 3 is having a hard time holding my attention for long periods. I believe I'm in chapter 3. I hope the investment of time pays off.
