Homie, Consoles are becoming less relevant. They're an outdated concept, and the PC is becoming stronger because many people in the core gaming audience are making the switch. With sites like Logical Increments to help people pick sensible parts, it's been easier than ever to do this. There are more online distributors like GMG and GOG. It's an expanding market, and it would expand without Valve's help.
However, they decided to make their next engine open source, and a whole bunch of other shit was announced this GDC. So they've still managed to massively help PC gaming.
Everything is going to be fine, and everything would still be fine without Valve.

I don't get why some people still have a problem with Steam Machines. I think they're fine for what they are, majority will still build a PC, but some there still is a market for pre builts even though they can be a tad overpriced.
Valve created SteamOS and Steam Machines in order to not be so dependent on Windows and DirectX. They see it as backup plan just in case Microsoft does something crazy with Windows or DirectX. So far things are fine, but you never know what could happen down the line. So, they decided to start now to at least get the ball rolling and get some games ported to Linus/SteamOS.
