They allow you to escape out of basically any situation. Believe me when I say it was given a chance at the start of it's life span and quickly dropped. The concept almost goes against fighting games themselves. The idea of a balanced neutral is crucial. Someone being able to escape an disadvantageous situation so easily is just bad design.

I can see how people don't like holds, but it's a 4point system, it's not like you can easily get out of any situation or just spam holds espacially against good players.
You really have to know every characters combos and mix ups in addition to the playstyle of your oppenent to be able to hold often and even than the opponent will adjust to it.
It may go against the "concept" of fighting games themself, but it also makes them more realistic just from a technical standpoint, of course ninjas and tengus aren't exactly realistic.
In mixed marital arts you don't land a hit and from that point on you can hit all you want,
The oppenent would take their chance to get out of it through dodging, blocking and in the end holds too.
As i said i get taht some people don't like itm but it's not like holds invade other games or force them to have them too.
It deserve it's place with the other fighters, it may not be the best, but it's far from being shit.

Making a fighting game more realistic from a technical stand point is not necessarily a good thing, and I think DoA is an example. In fighting games, you are rewarded for successfully reading or outspacing your opponent. This is the same for something like chess when you put them in check, where your opponent has to react to your turns (disadvantage) as opposed to positioning themselves freely (neutral). Winning a fighting game usually involves capitalizing on the advantageous situation in some way. Allowing your opponent to escape this with holds just makes the attacker weary of attacking, since the tide can be turned so easily. Again, this is imbalanced.
You are not rewarded for you check as you should be. It's like if you put someone in check, but if you weren't careful, the opponent could put you in check in just one turn, while you had to work to get yours.
I like DOA cause its fun. I dont win much cause I'm bad, and honestly I don't care too much to git gud cause well gittin gud isn't too much fun, but I still try to improve combos cause its fun. Vidya games are fun. FGC and everyone else can suck it.
