It will NEVER work.

It will just flop and everyone will go back to playing their Xbone/PS4/Wii U and waiting for the new systems in the meantime.

It will be outadvertised by Microsoft and Sony

You think they don't know about this shit?

Valve/PCgamers/PCUCKS make me laugh sometimes.

The simplicity of a console cannot be beaten. You can throw all the hardware you want Valve but it won't work. Plus some people prefer physical copies of games so expect it to also flop.

I love /v/'s insightful market analysis. I mean a company like Valve, that has hired economists, all sorts of tech guys and whose platform shows them what their entire userbase is buying, whether it's games or the gardware they use, SOMEHOW knows less than the experts on /v/. Amazing.
>>
>>285761559
Even if that WAS an SSD, 500gb SSDs are not expensive anymore. You can get them for sub-$300 now. Which with that shit of hardware you're spending ~$500, so add in that SSD and you're only spending at max $850. But it's not an SSD, it's a shit SSHD. So nope.

>>
>>285761602
General rule for joining mustard race:

Never buy prebuilt.
Buying prebuilt means you have no idea what you're buying. The people selling it know that.
It's like going to a caryard and asking for "A car that goes 'broom!'" Suddenly everything costs double.

Learn to build your own, buy the parts and make it.
For $1000 you can make a beast that wont get off ULTRA settings for at least 4 years.

It's really not that hard, there's very little that can go wrong when putting a computer together. Just put plugs into about the only sockets they will fit in to.

If you're really lost, ask /g/. But remember they will sperglord all over anything that is recommended by...anyone really.

The point of these isn't to kill consoles in November. It isn't even to kill consoles by 2020. The OEMs selling these will probably be happy to see 3-5 million sales in the next two or three years.

The whole point of this is to fill a niche that has been abandoned by the console market in their race to lock hardware down, and to give system builders from the big OEMs like Dell, to the small local guys a new product that they can sell, and home builders a new option for a cheap machine other than pirating Windows.

With x86 SOCs with decent graphics hardware on the horizon combined with Vulkan's increased performance we could very easily have systems that cost what a console costs with better performance. Its not something everyone will want, but it will carve out a sustainable niche for PC gaming outside of the control of tablet companies.

Sure, you can build your own pc if you're so damn lucky that you had a friend working at a pc repair shop show it to you or you have your dad working as an engineer or something. I hate using this word, but you can't even understand how privileged you are. For the rest of us, building your own pc is not just "oh, of course I know where to plug each of these 15 cables".
I tried it once, after a few hours of trying I gave up and just brought the half-assembled machine to a repair shop. It turns out I broke both my CPU and video card, and in total it cost me over $600 more than just buying prebuilt.
>>
>>285764241
There's still no generally available SOC that's the equivalent of the consoles, let alone better than them. Until AMD's Zen comes out we may not see a better single chip solution and that will keep the price relatively high.

Though not this high, some of these machines are just plain rip offs, and I'm not sure why Valve is allowing them unless they're in foreign countries and VAT and international shipping and other crap is factored into that cost.

Anyone here thinking about a Steam Machine should probably be building their own. I know that's what I'm going to do to get my friends and relatives off consoles.

>>
>>285765158
My brother built his PC last year, it took him like a week because he had to watch a ton of videos just to make sure he was doing it ruined right. Then there's the risk that something might break if you're too forceful. And certain parts will only work with only other compatible parts. I'm not autistic so i understand why a lot of people choose not to build a PC. People who are so triumphant about it are the same who only gain affirmation through their video games 'skill'.
>>
>>285765158
That is why I always tell first time builders to take it easy, and to not spend more than $700.

As for Steam Machines, these will really take off in a few years when single board PCs start to be capable of playing games acceptably, and outside of developed countries SteamOS seems tailor made for net cafes where now you could keep the gaming PC locked in the back with just a cheap $50 box hooked up to the screen which can be a cheap HDTV instead of a computer monitor.

Yeah I don't really see what everyone here is getting so mad about.

WE ARE NOT THE TARGET MARKET. Simple as that. These things being popularized can only mean good things for pc gaming and hardware prices. We profit from those who wish to play pc games with no effort in their living rooms. And with VR on the horizon and Valve's tracking solution being amazing, I suspect PC gaming is about to get more popular than it already is.

More people entering this market is a good thing for us. No ones forcing you to buy overpriced hardware.

On paper, the PS4's GPU is faster. It's specced between the 7870 and 7850, both of which are faster than the 750 Ti.

However, there's no real way to just up and compare the GPU itself to other systems using the same CPU, so wouldn't comparing a single GPU to a SOC be just as nonsensical?

PCs running SteamOS aren't consoles though in the same way that a PC running Windows 8 isn't a tablet.

The gaymen industry really just doesn't even hide it anymore, does it? They think GAYMURZ will just pay any amount for anything pandered at them that's the most "leet" and "hardcore" to "own" the "newbs" with. It's honestly kind of insulting to think that we're viewed as some stupid manchildren who need our own stupid manchildren stuff..... gamer grub, those yellow gaming glasses, these 1337 steam machines WITH 32 RAMS TO HELP YOU GET FRAGS FASTER

Something like this would be better.

Might need to do some checking on some parts, but for the basic parts, cpu/gpu/ram its a solid start.

This will be about 2-3x better than the steam machine.
>>
>>285768986
>they think gaymurz qwill just pay any amount

the Xbox 360 Elite was a prime example of this being a fact. The typical dudebro ego has increased 10 fold over the past decade, they have to have the product that is marketed as hardcore or else they feel like inferior, while completely unaware that they're being scammed.
>>
>>285768247
In the real world though its not faster because its clock limited because of the lower thermal overhead, it has no dedicated memory, and of course its tied to a CPU that by PC standards is a bit of a joke.

That's why review sites have to start reviewing whole systems instead of trying to isolate components. SOCs are going to become more and more common, and the vast majority of users buying machines today get integrated graphics.

Well with technology and games being a big part of every day life now, men are constantly competing with each other in their teen years to prove who is better at what. So when a product comes out that is marketed as hardcore, 1337, and "exclusive", they will buy it as fast as they can just so they can brag to their friends and feel superior.

It's what happens when normies pick up any trend, they will stop at nothing to make themselves look better than others so they can appear to be cool, and they won't stop until they run the subject into the ground.

I mean, I understand "cancer" is a considered a meme around here, but it truly is like a cancer.

They were always talking about <insert latest AAA vidya here> non-stop and how hype they were, and they'd order <insert latest AAA vidya here> to the office, and unbox it, and talk about how hype they were to play it, then go home and beat it and one sitting. They would never talk about the game again... instead they'd start talking about <insert next latest AAA vidya here>. Never once would they even be aware of anything that wasn't <insert latest AAA vidya here>.

Steam Link was also confirmed to be $50. The only way they'd get $250 would be four Gabepads and a Steam Link, which is maybe what some of these idiots are doing.

Or maybe they're setting their initial price high so that when they launch lower the competition won't have time to undercut them, and so that clueless people will say "Wow, regular price $1000 but I'm getting it for $600? What a deal!"

SteamOS really has no purpose other than building/buying a steam machine, honestly. Anyone with a brain wanting to build a Linux powered rig would just install Debian, then Steam.

SteamOS literally gimps your machine into a console, so it should never be installed on a desktop
>>
>>285757989

>>
The only reason to buy a prebuilt is a good warranty. If it's less than 3 years for a $1000+ machine dont eben bother.

but most stand alone PC parts also come with warranties

kek
>>
>>285772064
I understand that, but you'd have to be braindead to install SteamOS on a desktop. HTPC is a different story, but a desktop, no.

>>

>>
>>285771802
Right, but if what you want is a living room machine to use as an HTPC and to play games then its perfect. You can run Kodi on SteamOS and have something that we haven't really been able to do since XBMC was locked out of running on console hardware.
>>
>>285771325
Sounds like you're mad they're having fun? Indie and AAA alike, lots of people finish a game and move on to the next. That's typically what video games are for, outside of multiplayer FPS/MMORPGs.

>>285771920
That's wrong though. Most parts have a default of a minimum 1 year warranty, up to lifetime, and you usually have to pay for any warranty on prebuilts. Best case offer is typically 1 year parts only and it's limited, and takes 3 months to get your PC back instead of a 2 week turnaround RMA for the single part.
>>
>>285772047
Tricking Newegg is easy. Dealing most manufacturers is not. I dont consider those warranties legit. You have to go as far as saving the static wrap in pristine condition for replacement parts.
