Steam Machine initiative is exciting because it's the first step to a future of Steam Sales on hardware, and the magic phrase 'budget gaming prebuilt'.
PCMR can cry as much as they want, there's really nothing wrong with prebuilts, especially when the price is being driven down to the point they can be replaced rather than upgraded (ok, there are a LOT of problems with this ethically/environmentally, but that's beyond our scope).
VR is about to make specification comparisons confusing and terrifying on a whole new level, the availability of 'just works' prebuilts will be more relevant and necessary than you might imagine. and meanwhile it's still a PC.
