What Metroid game have they ever cancelled besides metroid Dread over 10 years ago? Which didn't even get to the development stage. It was just a concept that got a trademark.

No one knows. Possibly because the groups who usually work on Metroid games (R&D1, Intelligent Systems and Retro) have been very busy making almost a dozen other games. Or maybe they've already started making a new Metroid and just haven't told anyone. Maybe they want to make a completely new 3D engine unlike Prime which could take years. There could be many possibilities.

In an ideal world, you could make Metroid exactly the same and still have a new release every 2-3 years. The problem isn't really the fanbase (which is pretty cancerous when it comes to Metroid), its the inconsistency of the people who work on Metroid games. Sakamoto for example made like 5 WarioWare games in between Fusion and Other M. As well as other games. On the flip side, Retro made 5 Prime games in 6 years.

Not really. If it was that way, she wouldn't use a suit at all. And the suit could still manage heat and exposure.
The only confusing thing about the suit is Samus not having a helmet. Which kind of breaks the illusion of Zebes being a barren world. But that was already broken in the very first Metroid with the Justin Baley code. Zero Suit Samus is basically just a nod back to that.
