If you don't mind waiting for a Steam sale, you can usually get the ultimate edition for $5-8.
The DLC adds some pretty neat perks and stuff, as well as a couple of good quest lines, but the base game is still great on its own.

I started playing New Vegas a couple of days ago. Was disappointed with Fallout 3 and expected the same Gamebryo nonsense in New Vegas. I still got the nonsense, but my god does proper writing make a difference.
Don't get me wrong, I couldn't be further away from being an Obsidian fanboy. The company has a habit of getting way too much praise for standard RPG writing, but New Vegas is such an improvement over Fallout 3.
