Remember that one game you heard early talks of that you got excited for, waited 5 years just to see the release trailer, got even more fucking exited, waited another 2 or 3 years for it to finally come outand it was a complete and total letdown?
Imagine if you paid for it at the beginning of that 7 year hype cycle.
Games take ages. You put money in early because you're excited, but unless the kickstarter really engages its supporters then you're just left with the sentiment "thanks for your money come back in a few years to see the final product" and the hype just sort of dies by the time the game's out.
Only good aspect is not having to worry about publishers, but that can become a bad aspect if the devs take advantage of the fact too much. Even ignoring the chance of it never coming out, the devs taking your money and running, or the issues you should have as a consumer for paying for something that's in the early stages of existing, I don't like it.
