Gimme a mouse and keyboard.

I'm surprised they didn't put a texture on the right pad like they did on the left. I think originally they had rings so you could feel where on the surface you were but maybe they hurt over time. An octagon around the outside would have been nice.

Definitely picking one of these up when they launch. Might build a Steam Machine at that time too.

They should drop the analog stick for a dpad and bring back the rings that were visible in the prototypes. Also the glossy material is a disgusting fingerprint magnet.

Last longer anon. Much longer.

I think Gaben's finalized controller looks great. Especially on the left motion pad, that doubles as a D-pad. (May need some getting used to.)
However, not sure on the right motion pad. Fingers may slip.

It seems Steam has claimed the final controller analog stick placement position, not already taken by competitors. Sony has two at bottom, MS has left on top, right at bottom (exchangeable positions at some models), Nintendo has both on top. Now steam has one at left bottom.

Yeah, I like the back buttons it makes it so you don't have to take your thumbs off the analog sticks.

Xbone kids pay tons of money for something similar, it gives them an edge in shooters.

Do you guys even know the charge life of a Wii U pro controller vs a DS4?

You should already own a few sets of good rechargeable batteries to make your life easier.

I only use PC controllers for fighting games and platformers. Both require a good dpad.

It's basically a trackpad though in games it acts like a trackball with momentum to keep "rolling" when you take your finger off. The controller uses physical feedback motors to make it feel like a trackball too.

>>285652345
Maybe it's just for convenience/EU laws as they expect everyone to have at least 1 micro-usb cable lying around.

RTS is a dead genre, so no fucks given. Everyone worth their salt is using M+KB anyways.
>>
>>285652240
You don't know until you've tried it, and neither do I.
For all we know, the concave-like positioning of the d-pad may just require you to move your thumb and glide over the direction you want, rather than use muscles to push a button down. It could either be a more efficient button-press registering process, or a more tedious one.
>>
>>285652069
Its a membrane that's touch sensitive and that has haptic feedback pistons behind it. Its meant to work like a trackball but emulating one way bigger than you could fit into a controller.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfN5WK7OzU8
>>
>>285652502
Yeah I realize that. I admit I don't play RTS games too often. I'm just saying that the track pads are made to work really well with games that use the mouse often.
>>
>>285652673
That's besides the point isn't this controller meant to be as a good as KB+M or some shit, therefor it should be able to be used on a RTS comfortably.
>>
>>285650407

>>285652040
>no, It's just that. pushing a button>touch interface/motion interface. Always

The right track pad should absolutely crush analog stick aiming. It's not made to compete with using a mouse, but it can make mouse based games playable with a pad, if you cared - if not, don't buy it.

The left trackpad is pretty experimental. Maybe helpful for panning in RTS and some VR shit we might need in the future. Or maybe valve really thinks you can one day get used to controlling movement with it. They could've replaced it with a D-pad, but what games need both a digital D-pad and a trackpad? This controller needs to be on the frontier instead of trying to do everything, use a conventional controller.

Nothing will ever be as good as KB+M, there was never any doubt about that. But they can try their best to make it somewhat like it.

You'd think that, but I'm not sure it will work quite like that if games are made for this controller.

I might have more buttons ... or less, and would probably have a d-pad that only has 8 or 16 directions rather than a circular area freeform touch control...

OK, so I was really looking forward to this, but I think I'll just straight up pass. Not even give it a chance.

The original version with no anologue stick and the touchscreen was a day one buy for me, but now it's less differentiated than a standard DS4 controller. It looks plain, but not in a sleek/simplistic way, it's just straight up boring and ugly.

I'm seriously confused why they are even bothering if this is the design they're going with. They should have just had two version - original with trackpads and touchscreen, and a 'simple' version with analogue sticks. This is fucking gross.

They should've put them all at the back so your thumbs would never leave the trackpads.

It's supposed to be different, a new way to play pc games. Now its just an xbox controller and I already have one of those.
>>
>>285654385
They did away with the touch screen because you'd have to look at the controller to use it. It was easier to just create a way to show an overlay on the screen if you needed to access the contextual keyboard.

Also there's no way that the touch screen would work with VR.

Personally, I think the touch screen was a *bad* idea (out of place, probably a pain to operate even with both hands) and the analog stick is a good idea.

> I'm seriously confused why they are even bothering if this is the design they're going with.
...because it makes quite a lot of sense if you want to have something that can stand in for a keyboard and mouse as well as a classic console-style controller.

Overall, I'm far more worried about the manufacturing quality and technical details than the general concept.

How? The 4 buttons spread across the controller and split between both hands was retarded, and the touchscreen as an abysmal number of use cases that can't be accomplished some other way, and would be expensive, and would reduce battery life.

>but now it's less differentiated than a standard DS4 controller.

And you can play games designed for currently existing gamepads now.

>They should have just had two version - original with trackpads and touchscreen, and a 'simple' version with analogue sticks.

So release a version that sucks and a version that only does what we already have on the market.

Yea, if, but that sounds unlikely.

You can already plug in Xbone controllers into Linux right now.

Of course with the XInput and/or DirectInput mess these controllers are designed for, you might need a helper application -heh.
>>
>>285654514
You already have 4 shoulder buttons and a pair of paddles underneath. That real estate is used. Map controls there first.

If games require so many buttons that it needs a data hand keyboard to optimize play, it sounds retarded anyway.
