You buy licenses, not games, to play the games through Steam. Most games will be impossible to play without Steam installed and connected to Steam (you need to connect at least once to play offline). It's a DRM platform, plain and simple.

Exceptions like System Shock 2 and Recettear but only because they don't have Steam integrated, just have a separate middleman launcher for the Steam version.

You buy a license to play a game no matter what. It is illegal to say you own a game unless you actually buy the IP from its owners. Whether you get it from Steam, GOG, or retail, it is just a license to play a game that somebody else owns. As for playing games without Steam, you buy the game knowing full-well you need Steam to play it. If you don't want to use Steam, buy the game from somewhere else or download an external launcher. And Steam can be started in offline mode.

Linux has been useful as fuck for Microsoft, and they've been even using Linux for their own servers with things like Skype and Azure. The move to make .NET and C# open source is probably a move to get more developers interested in working with them, and in general getting their own tools working on Linux.

From personal experience MS has always been pretty nice. They have host events to teach kids how to code, my brother got an entire Pro dev suite from MS back when that cost about 1K or so.
Their ex-ceo have been working in projects to save mankind as a whole.

Apple however fucking hates people.

Overly broad patents are a thing. A lot of patents have questionable applicability, but nobody wants to go through a lawsuit for it, since it's easier, and less costly, to just pay the licenses a company demands.

Google in contrast host piracy in their directories, which I guess is good for fedora tiping manchildren everywhere, abuses of the few people who pay publicity campaigns on them in the most nefarious of ways, infringes patents like a motherfucker, and evades taxation at ludicrous levels.

It's a different system. A lot of people like it for the speed and security, along with it seeming like a better alternative than the Windows versions that Microsoft has been putting out lately, but like anything, it has its pros and cons, and whether or not it's "better" is up to personal opinion.

I'm of the opinion it definitely is better for my needs, but a lot of people would not really find Linux to be "for them". The only way to really find out if you'd truly like it is to try it, go into it with an open mind, and be able to learn things.

Steam can't just be Linux with Steam pre installed. There is no way. Its going to be a Linux based completely redesigned OS, right? What we have now is just a beta and not anything close to what SteamOS is going to be. Yeah?

If not, I'm completely confused as to the point of SteamOS.

>Steam can't just be Linux with Steam pre installed.
It's really just an OS optimized around Steam. In some ways, yes, it's just Linux with Steam pre-installed, but it's really not that simple.

>If not, I'm completely confused as to the point of SteamOS.
It's basically just to be the OS for your "game console". Shit like Steam boxes will just be shit like Living Room computers you control with their controller.

The other point is basically their agenda of shifting the monopoly Windows has on PC gaming to Linux.

Pretty much this. I switch linux distros every couple of months on my ancient laptop just to see what I like. In general most distros boot much faster and use less resources allowing me to do more with limited hardware. The added benefit is many come prepackaged with better software for the kinds of I use my laptop to do. It can't game for shit but that really wasn't an option even with windows.

You vote with your dollar.

I didn't buy Evolve because of 2Ks DLC practices. I got a decent amount of entertainment from the alpha and beta, but I'm not going to support a company that's furthering the anti-consumer movement in video games.

Some people might feel the same way about Borderlands writing.

If you support a company that does things you don't like, you're telling them that it's okay that they're doing things that you don't like. You should always consider the implications of your purchase, but todays gamer does not, which is why we have such low quality shit with publishers nickel and diming every chance they get.

They also wrote a window manager that helps deal with games that start in windowed mode. When you open a game, it either takes the whole screen or the WM adjusts the view in such a way that the game appears to be fullscreen. You can of course change the settings to make it the right res and be properly fullscreen, but at the surface it just looks like a console game would.

Other things to look at include their kernel branch (has additional controller support, etc.) as well as a branch of Mesa for FOSS driver support:

I double checked this and booted up my devkit, seems the current Mesa revision is 10.1.6-steamos. So yeah, it is pretty old.

There was recently a regression in Mesa that caused one of my games to break pretty hard, but I think that's since been fixed... and even then, there were a number of revisions between the SteamOS revision and that bug, so I'm not sure what's up.

At least the blob drivers are relatively new I guess.
