>VR games are taxing on hardware, there is no "target platform" for the PC, and even today Oculus Rift demos require the most powerful graphics cards on the planet. Players could get an OR, bring it home, and be frustrated that they have to upgrade their system, or have to spend significant amounts of time tweaking the settings, but not on Project Morpheus.

>Sony delivered a responsive, 3D control solution that allowed me to reach out, grab two objects, reload a gun by slamming a clip in, and aim in a way that felt real enough to be satisfying. That's something that's rare in virtual reality. Sony doesn't have a head start, they have a finished race while everyone else is trying to figure out how to begin.

>Sony has always had great relationships with indie developers, and indie developers always seem to love Sony. Sony knows how to speak to indie devs, they know how to create a hospitable ecosystem for smaller developers while Oculus and Valve sitting on their hands.

>This is the power of a pure consumer electronics brand making a big bet on VR: They can do everything themselves, and do everything right.

Damn, Sony just BTFO Valve and Oculus.

Just as Panasonic has to speak to indie devs so the game can get projected onto a TV, right?

>Sony delivered a responsive, 3D control solution that allowed me to reach out, grab two objects, reload a gun by slamming a clip in, and aim in a way that felt real enough to be satisfying

That's already been done in countless other demonstration, but I guess you could argue whether it felt "satisfying" or not, which is highly subjective, making this entire point "I like Sony a god damn much", as if that wasn't clear from the start.

Polygon is shilling so hard it's hilarious. Did they forget that the Oculus started as a crowdfunding project? People already voted with their wallets and it was for the Oculus, and now that it has big brother Facebook footing the bill, the sinking ship that is Sony Entertainment has no hope of competing with FB's bottomless bank account.

The DK3 has twin 1440p displays, and the commercial version is going to be even higher res. No screen-door effect, invisible pixels. Weak consoles that can barely maintain 30fps @ 900p arn't even going to be seen as real competition to the VR crowd, they're for casuals and peasants.

When the Move was shown at E3, I had the slightest glimmer of hope for it. I knew in my heart of hearts that it would be garbage, and I wouldn't be buying it, but the tech demos they showed were pretty neat and a lot better then the waggle of the Wii motion controls. There was the slightest chance something could be done with it.

Then it got released and it got somewhere between zero and no good games whatsoever.

Integrating the Move into games takes even less effort then the Morpheus does since it draws no extra CPU or anything like that, and it could potentially work alongside a conventional control system. And devs still didn't want to do it because it was such a tiny market share. At best it was a toy gimmick, that got used twice and tossed away. Why in the flying fuck would the Morpheus be treated any differently? It's got even less footing then another product that already got tossed out and left for dead.

I don't understand console fanboys. I really don't.
>>
>>285578095
assuming this isn't low quality bait, let me ask you one question: have you ever used an oculus rift? I don't care if you like the rift or not, but have you ever used one? because the rift dk1 is an excellent example of why the morpehus and it's shitty resolution will be equivilent to pissing money down the toilet. you can see individual pixels and although you may sometimes feel a sense of immersion, you're always aware you're looking at a screen.

oculus has been improving this with every revision and they're getting closer and closer to retina quality displays, but morpheus will never be able to accomplish this because consoles simply can't handle it.

maybe you can arge that framerate and resolution don't matter on your big ass TV from across the room, but strap that shit to your face and you better believe it does matter.
>>
>>285576510

The morpheus unit is only used to encode what is being displayed to the TV correctly.
>>
>>285579009
http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/

It's not a perfect simulation by any means, it's got a lot of little problems. It doesn't do the screen door effect properly for one since there should be a tiny bit of black space between each pixel, but it's a good general idea. 720p is barely usable.

With the rift you can just tell the customer they need more powerful hardware. On the console the hardware is fixed so you have to rework the graphics pipeline, potentially making a nasty mess of your game.

People are still figuring out that being first matters about as much as it does in an internet thread as it does IRL. Nintendo's effort was disappointing. Sony is jumping the gun with severely underpowered technology. We're still at minimum a year away from useful devices for the open market. We need to be patient. Jumping on the first 1080p headset to hit the market will give you nothing but literal headaches.

You could make a low poly count, cartoony looking game, and it would run on the PS4's VR headset without a hitch so long as you didn't overtax the hardware. They could have something like TF2 or Splatoon in VR, and it would run great.
Trying to get something like that latest Killzone game to run smoothly in VR is an entirely different story.

Well, these are definitely some good points. Going mainstream will be near impossible with something that needs a hi-spec PC as a platform. The potential user base is just too low.

Having VR bundled with a PS4 will be way more convenient. I hope Sony doesn't fuck this up.

They already have. It may be the first to market, but it can only compete against current devkit models. Against the Vive on launch and the CV1, it will lag behind very, very far. They're trying to hit the market with VR tech from RIGHT NOW. Too bad the tech 'right now' is still unsuitable.

Here's the thing.

Steam stats show that the vast majority PC players have rigs that are less powerful than a PS4. These are people who don't have the hardware to be able to play win an OR or equivalent. Valve is popular on Reddit and shit but they are just a minority, Valve firmly believes that good products will advertise themselves (lol Wii U).

There are 20 million PS4 owners who can support the Morpheus.

Morpheus will sell more because it has a larger potential user-base and has a company who knows marketing behind it.

It's funny how some people think VR will reach the masses.
It won't blow, a lot of people will like it in fact, especially simulator fans, but general public won't.

Movies in VR? Movies are social experience. I mean I sometimes watch them alone on my PC but I don't even care to plug HDMI to my TV when I do it. I'm watching movies on TV when my friends are in, I'm going to cinema on dates etc.

VR in games? On consoles? Wasn't one of the biggest things about consoles the fact that they're played on couch, so they're far more "social experience".

Porn will work with VR. Simulators will work with VR. Some institutions may make VR museums for sightseeing and so one, but I doubt in their commercial success.

But mainstream products? No way.

Where are you buying your parts, buddy? That might be the cost if you buy an overpriced pre-build, but if you have to do that you should just be playing on consoles with the rest of your kind.
>>
>>285573285
The whole early stage of VR is homebrew.

No company is going to invest into a fully blown VR game, at most it will be a small after through and thus be a bad experience. Homebrew and indie projects that are 100% made for VR are going to lead the platform in the first years which is why a console VR is retarded at this point.

Especially with the horrible performance of consoles the actual experience of the Morpheus in ACTUAL games ( not 'cinematic' experiences ) is questionable. You need a combination of high resolution and high frame rate, which is exactly a combination which PS4 is unable to do with it's underpowered hardware.

The problem is that WiiU has subpar services that are considered normal nowadays.

WiiU doesn't even have account systems. UI is sluggish as fuck. It even doesn't support netflix in 1080p for fucks sake(and the netflix app is broken as fuck) - my phone is better than that. Of course you will say buy muh vidya, but typical consumer buys X console instead of Y and Z because
>they have better graphics
>they function as multimedia centre more effectively
>they offer better reliability etc.
>isn't a chore to use

Neither Xbox or PS4 or WiiU have wonky reliability, I'd argue that all of them look decently so the 2 other points remain.
And WiiU is the worst when it comes to it.

So why exactly would you expect it to success?
>>285587479
Anon, my point is that people don't want it. Of course if Apple would launch with their VR headset it would probably work but if Apple would start marketing shiteating, you'd find people eating shit on the street too, but as far as I know they aren't here.

The only use for VR that might attract shit-grinning normalfags are VR chatrooms, so you know, you can meet your friends online in your room but only that Microsoft thing, coupled with kinect may pull it off, eventually.

Stop being dumb. Whoever comes up first with the most user friendly version of VR and will be able to market it right will lead for a long time. Period. There will be another 3 or 4 copycats who will be highly successful.
Think Apple or Angry Birds for the masses. Or even the fucking Wii - which was the biggest piece of shit in gaming history and yet that dreck sold over 100 million times, because it set the masses on fire and everyone wanted in on the ride.
VR is a fairly revolutionary technology for Average Joe who does not come into contact with video games or interactive media at all. It can be the new IT thing like smarthphones and tablets have been years ago, until everyfuckingone around the world will have it and it becomes part of our daily life like radio, tv and mobile phones.
It is still totally open which company will be responsible for triggering mass hysteria. It COULD be Sony, it could be Samsung or Apple but it sure as fuck won't be HTC/Valve, they are too niche and are only PC focused - pandering to a small circle of elitist shits.

It has to be a company that could combine and implement VR not only with games but also movies and interactive teaching systems, traveling agencies etc. so it won't only be that little video games toy, but something the broad mass can embrace and use.
I also don't believe Kikeberg will have much success with his Rift, despite Facebook having a userbase of like 2 billion people. They own the tech but they don't own everything around it that would warrant a huge take-off. That is something only traditional tech companies could pull off.

Those are my two cents.

Lack of 3D and head-tracking in videogames is a bigger problem than most people think. For so many years now we've been playing games with no depth perception and our character's heads locked in a neck-brace.

The ability to intuitively move your head independently from your body/arms/gun without interrupting movement controls is huge, especially for first-person driving/piloting.

If you argue technology, they tell you graphics don't matter and that they have better games.

If you point out that it would be better if everyone could play the games on the best system, they say that the PC isn't the best/too expensive

If you point out that an entry grade PC is cheaper than a console, they argue that a console is more convenient.

If you point out that you can hook up a PC to your TV and use controllers, they'll start at the beginning.

Wut

How is $1800 the minimum for a 'low tier' PC?
You can get a PC that is better than these consoles for like $500

I'm not a fucking sony shill, I don't even own a fucking console, which makes it all the more infuriating that a fucking braindead spastic like you keeps arguing such retarded points.

There's a good fucking reason Oculus isn't coming out for a long time. VR isn't fucking ready. According to them, the headset needs to display 4K in each eye at a high framerate in order to not induce nausea and disorientation. I don't fucking care about "the power of the PS4", there is nothing Sony can do to get around this. And that means they're going to release this piece of shit Morpheus too early, everyone will hate it because it makes them sick, and then they'll be put off from VR for good. So once again we'll be able to thank Sony for ruining everything.

You are forgetting the poptarts, guys.

Nah, but seriously, that has to be a troll. People thinking 1000 bucks is the minimum for a PC is believable, but 1800 bucks.

Why would anyone want to play VR games at 24 fps?

I don't have anything against Sony or any particular hardware platform but come on, consoles are not powerful enough for this. Two gens down? Yeah, we'll see. If you think this is anything but a gimmick to stay relevant enjoy your expensive flip book goggles.
