Most important things for mainline SMT games: Buffs, debuffs, weaknesses. Make sure you resist the element the boss throws at you, have not one demon in your party that is weak to it. Also, buff and debuff the shit out of yourself and the enemy. Then you should be fine.

I'd argue that you'd better use the physical resist magatama in combination with the force negating Uzume, but that's up to preference. Still, don't forget the Hua Po for Rakukaja

I've always liked them on handheld, and the dual screen shit on the DS/3DS is just top tier for immersion and gameplay. You know what puts me off JRPGs on console? Fucking repeated animations for every goddamn attack. I hated it in Persona 4 and I hated it in Nocturne, I hope they keep it on handheld, but with 3D exploration like SMTIV

It's not really the same because it's an SRPG, but a lot of the core mechanics like fusion are in it so it's not a waste to start there. Also has one of the best story lines in the series. I started with the vanilla version on DS so overclocked should be fine. IV is good too though.

Overclocked starts out very slow, so I don't blame you. It starts to really get into motion I believe around day 2-3. How far are you into it? If you already fought beldr and don't like it I'd go for SMTIV

You can ingest different Magatama's that you learn set skills from and also set your resists and weaknesses.
But you can only have 8 and if you get rid of a skill you can't learn it again.

You get a manta, but I never used it. If you like bonus challenges give them a shot, though.
In Nocturne, you learn skills by equipping Magatama. These magatama give stat bonuses and resistances/weaknesses also. If you forget a skill you can't relearn it.
Demons learn skills by level-up, and you can pass skills to new demons via fusion.

You're still more or less in tutorial land. And since you have to save her a bunch of other times I'm guessing it's the first time you see her and she's getting cornered right?
That one is a tough fight, but you're still right at the begging. If the fight is giving you trouble I'd suggest getting a demon of the wilder family for the 7 movement bonus or a demon with animal leg as a racial skill for move again after battle. It's one of the few roadblocks in the game

Thing is, now I've played 1, Nocturne, and IV of the main series. My personal ranking is

Yeah it had some questionable design decisions, but it was a really well made game, and comparing it objectively with games like SMT 1, it's way better. SMT 1 has a super limited fusion system, a broken battle system, and an obnoxious map.
I loved the hell out of SMT 1, but I can't honestly say it was better than IV.

It's most complaints about the dungeons or lack of Kaneko, which to be fair aren't unreasonable complaints. I loved how a lot of the dungeons were seamlessly integrated into the overworld, it's the only SMT game that's really given me a sense of exploration and, but when you enter dungeons like Kagome Tower and Lucifer Palace thinking, "ahh yeah, time to crawl some motherfucking dungeons" and they come off as blatantly unfinished, it sucks.
I wish Doi redrew all the new demon art at least, he's a better artist than most of the guest artists and it'd be a consistent style.

Yeah I don't think Kaneko's creativity can be beat. I'd be interested to see Doi do original designs. But as far as pure drawing skill goes his redraws of other demon designs were pretty great.

Does anyone else purposefully try to make their ultimate team all loli-ish demons? Currently working on a Pixie, Nadia, Alice team in SMTIV for my hard playthrough. Alice is easy to make awesome but the other two even with the best skills are just barely passable. It's worth it though.

That's just a bad design, it's not fearsome in any way, and it's not really based on anything either, which is something I love about the usual demon designs in SMT, like Kushinada being based on a comb because of her backstory

Actually the main problem I run into aside from the poor inates is their HP / MP growth as low level demons don't scale well and end up less than an equal level demon caught at a higher level (controlling for MP/HP types) Actual raw stats are insane because of all the stat bonus apps but they all die in one hit and it's impossible to cover ALL the elements on them so I need to have enduring soul on each of them as well as MP surge and ideally HP surge.
